It depends on your budget, but I'd suggest you consider at least:

Oil pan skid
Relocate or skid the EVAP canister
Front swaybar quick disconnects
Rocker guards/sliders
Recovery bag with strap, d-rings, gloves.
Someone familiar with the area and obstacles, who has a rig, to go with you (don't wheel alone)
GPS and maps or guidebook
CB
Air compressor (to air up tires after dropping them to 10-12 psi for wheeling)
A cooler with plenty of water.
Bug spray if you ever go later in the summer (the biting flies on Cliffhanger in July are not very nice)
A digital camera

Also recommended if you are on a budget but want to try some more challenging stuff:

Front Aussie automatic, lunchbox locker.
Thanks for all the feedback. Yes I've got a friend coming with me. What do you mean by an Aussie Automatic and a lunchbox locker? ha

This locker:

Aussie Locker - Dana 30 JK (13227)

It replaces your spider gears in your front differential and can be installed over a long lunchbreak (thus referred to as a lunchbox locker).

Reference information about different kinds of lockers:

I'm sure there is a YouTube video and that there are other install write-ups around.

My wife, kids and I took our 2012 Sahara to Moab in May/June. Spectacular.

Grab the fantastic Moab Backroads book by Charles Wells. We took the book on the trails with us, plugging in the GPS coord from the maps provided.
Guide to Moab, UT Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails: Amazon.ca: Charles A. Wells: Books

Here's my pic of Top of the World. My wife refused to help me drive up to the ledge, she had to look away out of sheer fear ;-)

I'm running a Sahara with 4" Teraflex Lift and 33" Nittos. Stock 3.73s, stock open front, LSD rear. I took it easy as it was my first time there, only stayed for a few days on the way through to Arizona. I'm headed back again in a few months and will attempt some more challenging trails.

If you're interested to see what Top of the World, 7 Mile Rim, Tower Arch and Eye of the Whale trails look like, check out my video:

That thing is sweet! What would you recommend for the rear? I have a 2011 Sport.

I don't like automatic lockers in the rear axle for rigs with automatic transmissions or that are driven on the ice or snow. They tend to engage when you don't want them to. Any meaningful torque applied to the rear end during a turn will cause the locker to engage.

Someone with a 6 speed jeep, who develops the habit of pushing in their clutch and coasting around every corner can find them suitable for a daily driver that doesn't see much ice or snow.

Anyway, I'd suggest you run your rear axle as is until you regear. At that time, you could add a limited slip or a selectable locker (like an ARB), or upgrade to take-off Rubicon axles.

In the end, the most cost effective way to upgrade is to buy take-off Rubicon axles. You can find a pair that have already been regeared to 5.13s or 5.38s for around $3500. You can find a pair that still has stock 4.10 gears for around $2500.

Then, you can sell your stock axles to offset the cost.

By comparison, if you install front and rear ARB lockers and regear your stock axles, you are typically looking at about $550 for gears and overhaul kits, $1800 for the lockers, $200 for a compressor and air lines, and $800 for labor. That is $3350 to regear and add lockers to your stock axles--that are not as strong as Rubicon 44s. It is more cost effective to sell your stock axles and buy a set of take off Rubicon Dana 44s that have already been regeared.

Yeah Diff covers are definitely on the list before Moab. ARBs front and rear.

You dont need much for Moab, with the Brake lock assist you can damn near go anywhere. A good set of rockers and your set really.

When are you going? We are returning in August. You dont need alot. You are already setup. Recomend rocker protecton. Get the guide book. National Geographic as a set of topo maps that are great. Gps, lots of water, basic survival gear, tools, fluids. Dont go alone.

Tons of fantastic trails there. Enjoy!
