this may seem like a dumb question but i have to know. does the trail rated badge mean anything? do they put it on all the jeeps or are there jeeps out there that are not trail rated?

The 2WD jeeps are not trail rated.

Yes, the badge meant it meets certain specs and capabilities. It is on their website.

Jeep has standardized off-road tests. Their trims that get that designation have to pass those tests.

I believe the vehicle must have 4-lo to be "Trail Rated"

And the Hummer brand has something similar, the Hummer must fit at least 12 bags from baby gap in the back in order to receive their "mall rated" badge.

As far as I can tell, it is just for marketing. Any Jeep with a Hi-Lo xfer case has the badge. My brother has a full lux Grand loaded with everything (pretty chrome wheels, street tires, etc) and it has that badge - no freaking way he could follow me.

However, the '08/'09 model KX,WK, and KK models with the 18" wheel option do not have the TR badge.

    see above.

However, my '04 WJ had the TR badge and it had open diffs, no skids or tow hooks, and POS Wrangler ST street tires on it. I fixed all of that minus the open diffs but still... It did wheel pretty decently for what it was though, it just had a horrible rear departure angle. I used to always drag on the gas tank skid and the hitch liked to hang up on obstacles.
