EMERGENCY! NEED HELP! Death Valley NP area Jeepers!
Hi,
We are in Death Valley NP right now (at Stovepipe Wells). Our JK broke down at Racetrack parking area. I think it's just a battery, but I can't be sure. My wife and I are okay, but we had to walk like 6 miles to get the cell phone reception. Called 911 and the park ranger picked us up at Teakettle Junction but he didn't want to take us to Racetrack (our JK) to try to jump start it.
We called our insurance company, tow companies (in Ridgewood, CA and/or Henderson, NV) etc., but it seems that it cost over $2,500 just to have them go to the Racetrack. We asked some people who works at Stovepipe Wells, but no one seems to want to go there with us with their whatever the tracks/SUVs they have. The road to Racetrack is basically a gravel road -- it's not a real Jeep trail. Anyway, so, we basically stuck here... our Jeep left in Racetrack.
Is there anyone here that lives near Death Valley NP who is willing to take us back to Racetrack and jump start it? We can offer you about $200 and whatever the cost of the gas.
Please let me know (post message here and/or PM me) if anyone is interested. The cell phone doesn't work here and also the hotel/motel room doesn't have any phone -- they only offers Wi-Fi.
Thanks!

I'm not anywhere near you. But are you sure it is the battery and not the intermittent starting problem? There are other things to try also.
wiggle the key in the cylinder while I held it in the start position.
put the shifter in N (got an auto) and tried it and it started up fine
I pulled the key out (not sure why) and tried again and it started like normal. The other day I got the exact same thing. I am sure it has nothing to do with it - but I pulled out the key, played with the lock/unlock button, put the key back in and then it started.
Picture below for the following:
1. Open the hood, find the fuse box next to the battery, open it.
2. There's a large white/tan fuse case with two little 60 amp blade fuses in it....
pull up the white part, leave it up for 30 seconds.
3. Push the white part back down, close the box and hood, start the jeep.
Good luck, hopefully someone local will see this......

Thanks so much 08blkrubi! No, I'm not certain it's battery. I just thought so because when I tried to start, the dashboard lights, stereo lights etc. went on but didn't start. After I tried to start a few times, it went completely dead (no lights). I tried to put the gear in N while the key was in start position but it was locked and didn't shift.
Well, hope it's either the battery or the trick/tip you mentioned. I still need to find someone that wants to go Racetrack.
Thanks again, 08blkrubi! I really appreciate your reply!

Hmm....Maybe move this to the So Cal area? Hopefully someone local can help.
EDIT - - - - I guess this would be more central Cali, rather than So Cal.

Bump for sure this sucks man.....I too had that problem and if it is an auto try the fuse thing but if you have a manual ( i know this sounds weird) But rock your jeep back and forth for a minute and then it should start right up.
Mine did the same thing....wouldnt start and i just rocked it back and forth and it fired right up and never had the problem again.
Hope you rescue the JK
