Thumbs down 1st gear popping woes

I bought my used 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport about 6 or 7 weeks ago. The first night I drove it home it popped out of first gear. Since, it's popped out around 5-10 times a week. I filed a complaint today https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/. Also posted on LemonLaw blog Jeep Wranger Manual Transmission Popping Out Of Gear.

Took it to the dealership but they couldn't "replicate" the problem.

I did find that it appears that sometimes it's in 1st BUT it doesn't give the "crunch" I normally get when it is, in fact, in gear. So, to combat this, I put it in 2nd gear and then into 1st and it works fine. My boyfriend recommended this as he said that older vehicles (before synchronizers) had to be shifted similarly. Still stinks. Tired of looking like I don't know how to drive a manual transmission. I have to preface my friends' ride in my Jeep with "sometimes it pops out of first gear."

Hey,

This isn't going to help but I thought I would comment....
My 2010 Rubi started popping out of first gear as well.(Started around 82000 Km)
I was thinking clutch but it never happened in any other gear.
Started to irritate me to the point where instead of taking it in to get looked at,I just bought a 2013 Rubi instead.
Not much help but just wanted to let you know I had a similar issue.

My '08 has popped out of gear twice i think since I got it last April. I think it was out of 2nd and 4th maybe. Often, especially on cold mornings lately, my shifter has felt very notchy when shifting from 1st to 2nd and it almost feels like its grinding. I don't really hear grinding per se though. It's more of a very audible click, if that makes sense. At any rate, I feel like this is an issue related to the TSB posted earlier. To me, it seems like there is a problem with the synchros. It also doesnt go completely into reverse right away sometimes. I have to keep shifting into a forward gear or double clutch until it will. I noticed the TSB called for replacing something for the reverse gear also. Because of all this, I filed a complaint with the NHTSA.

Thumbed through the complains on the nhtsa there are several complaints about our problem... I wonder what the "magic number" of complaints needed before a recall is issued.

Just had this happen to me twice in the past two weeks both turning into traffic. Scared the crap out of my gf. I'm a tech I'm looking into buying the parts myself and replacing them. Just going to take some time.

Honestly guys this Happens to me quite a bit now and sometimes in 3rd. As long as you hold it in that gear for the split second firmly you will be fine.

This is most certainly fixable. Mine did it a couple times per week. Westgate Jeep in Plainfield, IN, took it in and fixed it. I suspect it was a major deal because they had the Jeep for several days. It hasn't done it since the fix.

My Jeep was fixed under the lifetime powertrain warranty that was an incentive when purchased new. I'm not sure how many miles ago I had this fixed, but I want to think I was in the 65k range, maybe 70k. If 70, then I've had the fix for more than 10k miles now and it is working just fine. It now shifts and feels as it should.

Any dealer that acts like this isn't a known problem is either woefully inexperienced and/or incompetent, or they are lying.

I know this is an older thread but felt this may help people. If you have warranty coverage then definitely use that but if you don't find a reputable transmission shop to rebuild your trans. This is not a mystery for those who have experience with these units. The issue with popping out of gear is usually the shift fork assembly. It is a known problem area in these units and unfortunately not cheap to repair. The shifter fork assembly costs about 450.00 alone and if your trans is higher mileage you can plan on adding atleast a bearing and seal kit to that as well.

It cost me 1600 to have my trans with 130K rebuilt. Fortunately the popping out of gear was occasional and no other major parts other than a bearing and seal kit were needed. If it is very frequent or constant then figure on gear sleeves, and possibly synchros, shift blocks, and even gear assemblies. But a reputable shop with experience should easily be able to do this and not cost you an arm and a leg. My shop told me up front, 16-18 hundred to rebuild. I had others, who had no idea or experience with these units, tell me 12 - 25 hundred to rebuild it.

Hope this helps people.
