1966 Jeep CJ-5 Tuxedo Park Mark IV

The Tuxedo Park was as fancy as the CJ-5 got in 1966. Will someone finally take it off-roading?

Have you ever seen a Jeep CJ-5 quite like this? Even when it was new, you probably never spotted ‘66 Jeep Tuxedo Park in this color. But this rare, pristine Tuxedo Park is up for auction at Mecum Las Vegas in November.

The Tuxedo Park package was marketed (as you might guess from the gussied-up name) as an upscale Jeep. We’re somewhat familiar with that concept these days, but Jeeps still had an “agricultural” reputation in the 1960s. This was Kaiser’s attempt to rebrand it as a leisurely automobile for a more affluent crowd.

The biggest change to the Tuxedo Park was an abundance of chrome. The bumpers, hood badges, license-plate frame, hubcaps and headlight/taillight trim all came from the factory shiny.

This Jeep’s original buyer checked tons of options on the order sheet too. This included the Surrey Gala Top option with a matching side-mounted spare tire. The Indian Ceramic paint doesn’t show up very often, but that color with the top and spare paint a picture of an affluent first owner with leisure on their mind.

Incredibly, this Jeep is all original. With only 2,961 miles on the clock, this CJ-5 obviously lived in a garage and enjoyed regular maintenance. According to the auction listing, it was “never driven on a dirt road.” Hopefully, its next owner changes that.

A license-built Buick V6 sits under the hood. Jeep enthusiasts know it as the Dauntless, one of the first V6s sold in the United States. The CJ-5 and longer-wheelbase CJ-6 first got the 225 cubic-inch V6 in 1966, making this a very early V6 Jeep. It mates to a three-speed manual transmission with a two-speed transfer case.

Hagerty suggests that a Concours-caliber Tuxedo Park should bring at least $21,000. However, we wonder if this one might just bring a premium over that price with the incredibly low miles.
