2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Debuts With Fresh Styling, Tech, 4xe PHEV
Months after the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L is revealed, the two-row version arrives with a plug-in hybrid option.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L was revealed way back in January, giving us our first good look at the fifth generation of Jeep’s long-running SUV. But for whatever reason, Jeep continued to sell the last-gen two-row Grand Cherokee right alongside the brand new three-row version. Now, that oversight has been corrected, as the automaker has finally pulled the covers off the brand new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, and it certainly looks like it was worth the wait.
On the outside, the 2022 Grand Cherokee looks a lot like the long-wheelbase L, as one might expect. It sports a far more modern look, with a slimmer front grille and headlights than the outgoing model, a lower roof that’s painted gloss black on some trims, and slim, wraparound taillights. It is roughly a foot shorter than the L, of course, most of which goes to the longer Grand Cherokee’s third-row seating.
The interior of the new Grand Cherokee is a big upgrade on the outgoing model, sporting a modern design and loads of updated tech features including a digital gauge cluster and 10.1-inch infotainment screen. Like the Grand Wagoneer, buyers can also opt for a passenger-side screen that measures 10.2 inches and offers climate and navigation controls for your co-pilot. Rear seat passengers can even get their own 10.1-inch screen, too.
The 2022 Grand Cherokee is available in Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit trim levels, and a total of three powertrains are available. The base engine is a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 293 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while an optional 5.7-liter V8 cranks out 357 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. Both of these powerplants are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The third powertrain is what makes the brand new Grand Cherokee 4xe so special – the same 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder gas engine and two electric motor combination that’s present in the Wrangler 4xe, which produces a healthy 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. The plug-in hybrid also achieves up to 25 miles of electric-only driving range, which should make for a very economical trip to the office.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee will arrive at U.S. dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year, with the 4xe set to follow in early 2022. Jeep hasn’t yet released pricing for the brand new SUV, but those numbers should be released when we get closer to the thoroughly modernized model’s launch later this year.
