The Next Wrangler Should Be as Capable as the General Dynamics Flyer 60

General Dynamics Flyer 60

We’ve seen the big, MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles that have been patrolling Iraq, Afghanistan, and the San Diego Unified School District, but there is a smaller truck I think we need to see more of: the General Dynamics Flyer 60. It’s the smallest and latest version of the Flyer series, and it packs some great off-road features.

The Flyer 60 is nowhere as big as the MRAP, and is smaller than the Flyer 72, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t capable. The Flyer 72 and Flyer 60 are both designed to fit in the tight confines of the V-22 Ospreys, H-47 Chinooks, H-53 Super Stallions and the new America-class of amphibious landers.

Specifically, the Flyer 60 is 60 inches wide, 60 inches tall and 180 inches long as it arrives before load-out. It’s powered by a 1.9L diesel that puts out 150 horsepower with a six-speed transmission and four-wheel drive. It has a top speed of 75 mph, though at 40 mph it can travel as far as 450 miles before needing more fuel. In addition to that, it’s also very budget-friendly, for it shares parts with the HMMWV like differentials, tie-rods, the alternator, ball joints, tires and even the air compressor.
