For decades, Mitsubishi built the CJ-3 under license.

Automotive history is full of amazing, entertaining footnotes. One such footnote is Mitsubishi’s long-running continuation of the Jeep CJ-3.

In 1953, Willys entered into an agreement to allow Mitsubishi to produce several variants of the Jeep CJ-3 and market it themselves. For decades, Mitsubishi produced the CJ-3 with continual updates, gradually improving each component of the Jeep’s running gear.

One thing that barely changed at all was the iconic WWII-era Jeep shape. Even the seven-slot grille was present. However, the three-pointed star over said grille reminds you that this was built by Mitsubishi. From 1953 until 1998, the Mitsubishi-built Jeep retained its iconic shape and form. And it just got better and better with age.

Due to their inherent charm, availability, and numerous factory upgrades, several have been exported to the U.S. for use by enthusiasts here. This example from 1984 was found for sale on Craigslist. It looks to be very well preserved, with just one prior owner, and around 52,000 miles on the odometer.

Being Japanese, the steering wheel is on the right hand side. But adjusting is easy enough — much simpler than you’d imagine. You could even pick up a part-time job delivering mail if you wanted to. No doubt this Jeep would handle all four seasons with ease.

Eventually, the humble Jeep would become capable of reasonably comfortable freeway cruising and deliver well over 25 miles per gallon. The 2.0 liter 4G52 engine was used in many contemporary Mitsubishis, and parts support is good. It’s a reliable engine that shouldn’t give you much trouble, though.

The axles are Dana 44 out back with a Dana 30 up front, paired with a Dana Spicer transfer case. Nothing exotic here, just tough, proven components way better than what the Jeep originally came with back in the 1940s.
