Jeep Pickup Not Going on Sale Until Late 2019

Here’s Why We’re Going to Have to Wait a Little Longer

If you’re waiting to buy yourself the next-generation Jeep Wrangler pickup truck, you’re going to have to wait a little longer. According to the company, it won’t be going on sale until late 2019. That really shouldn’t come as a surprise because the new Jeep Wrangler JL will be the lone star for 2018.

Converting a plant over to build a new model is a daunting task. In the case of retrofitting Toledo to make the new Wrangler, Jeep wants to make sure everything goes smoothly for their money-making product. A lack of production means a lull in sales, which ultimately affects FCA’s bottom line. The transition has to be perfectly executed, or the company suffers.

That’s a big task for any automaker, and one that FCA surely doesn’t take lightly. It also makes sense that the volume-selling Wrangler — not the pickup truck — gets out the door first. Once production is up and running, and all the kinks are worked out, then they can focus on getting the pickup truck built.

It’s like what Ford is doing with the Bronco. While the Bronco might be the hyped-up model that’s returning, the volume seller will undoubtedly be the new Ranger. It’ll make its appearance in 2019, while the Bronco has to wait for the 2020 model year. Sure, the waiting is the hardest part, but it just makes sense from a business perspective to follow the money.

Don’t forget, Jeep also has a full plate right now with other models. There’s a newly launched Compass that’s just now hitting the streets. They also have upgrades or retrofits in the works for other models, too. And there are only so many resources to go around.

So you might have to wait a little bit longer than expected. While that’s not the most fun, we all want to make sure the product is right the first time. We’re willing to give FCA the benefit of the doubt on this one. It’ll hopefully be worth the wait.
