Throwback Thursday: This Jeep YJ 6×6 Has a 12-Volt-Powered, Locked and Geared Trailer

Man needs a trailer to haul all the supplies his family requires. So, he invented a way to power the trailer and created a Jeep YJ 6×6.
The Jeep YJ is a bit of an odd duck with the square headlights and all. Some people love them and others, well, the YJ isn’t their favorite. We love the YJ. And what we love even more are uniquely built examples. And the Jeep YJ 6×6 we see here is certainly unique. The amazing thing is it is not even the Jeep itself that is the most impressive part. The trailer steals the show on this build.
This week’s “Throwback Thursday” is all about this 1992 Jeep YJ 6×6. It was purchased by Brad Ward back in 1997. Since that time the Jeep has undergone some upgrades, but none are as impressive as the trailer. Chris Collard from the Gone-Gpn YouTube channel recently caught up to Ward. The trailer caught his eye and he thought it was worth a closer look. It sure was. Checkout the details below.

The YJ
The Jeep is a nice example of a YJ. It has the 4.0L straight six hooked up to the 5-speed transmission. Stock Dana 30 front axle with a Detroit Locker. The rear axle is an 8.8 out of a Ford Explorer. It is running a 4.56 gear set and has disc brakes. The Jeep pushes a set of 35-inch super swamper tires on 15-inch wheels. It is lifted with the stock leaf springs running over top of the axles. Overall, it is a good, simple build. But wait to you see the trailer.

Necessity is the Mother of Invention
Ward would off-road with his wife and three daughters. And if you have a wife and three daughters, you know you need room for stuff. A lot of stuff. A trailer is a perfect solution. The trouble is a trailer could make your rig a little less trail worthy with the extra weight out back and the extra wheels dragging along. But Ward took this negative and turned it into a positive. He took a bell housing and a starter from a Ford V8. He then hooked a flywheel up to a driveline and connected it to the original stock rear axle from the Jeep. The rear axle has a Trac-Loc and 4.56 gears. So now with the push of a button the wheels of the trailer can push the Jeep out of a sticky situation. And now Ward has a Jeep YJ 6×6.

See it in Action
Ward climbs in the Jeep to give us a demo. He puts the Jeep in neutral. Then he just pushes the starter button. And then off he goes. The trailer pushes the Jeep forward. It is a real cleaver solution that makes the trailer even more functional. Watch the video below to see the trailer in action. This is something that you will not find at every Jeep show for sure. In fact, you may never see something like this anywhere else.
