How to Turn Your Jeep Into a Homemade Pickup

A ’99 Wrangler TJ gets new life as an extended Jeep mod with a bed and gang of other custom features.

Four Wheeler has never been one short on good tips.

Even when it comes to Jeeps, we’ve gotten a lot of useful info from our friends at the trusted off-road news source. But none quite been as interesting as a recent report titled “Homemade Jeep TJ Pickup Truck.” Maybe, it’s because it conceived from two of our favorite throwbacks here at JK-Forum: the TJ platform and a Jeep pickup.

The modified Wrangler, which made a showing at the 2017 Jp Dirt ‘N Drive, is the brainchild of Clint Malburg. Apparently, Malburg got tired of dreaming of owning a Jeep pickup and decided to build one of his own, as detailed in a recent Four Wheeler report.

Clint started with a 1999 Wrangler TJ, then stretched the frame 18-inches. That also required him to stretch some of the essential wiring in the Jeep like the emergency brake cables and fuel lines.

To accommodate for the lack of having an air conditioner, Clint modified the rear window so it’d be easy to remove. The TJ pickup also features custom front fenders and a modified hood. The goal was to build the bed to look like it was done at the factory.  From the looks of it, Clint appears to have pulled it off quite well. Other custom features include a Wagoneer Dana 44 front axle, JKS Adjustable Coil Over Spacers, and Fox 2.0 shocks.

Chime in on the forum right here.

The TJ pickup conversion is powered by 4.0-liter inline-six engine paired with an AX-15 manual transmission and it rides on 17-inch Method Wheels wrapped with 37-inch Goodyear tires.

Pretty cool, right? But here’s a word of advice: If you’re considering converting your own Wrangler into a pickup, we’d strongly urge you to read the full Four Wheeler report here. It provides a clearer view of all the work that goes into bringing the idea to life.
