Watch This Hailstorm Destroy a Windshield

By -

Ever wondered what it would be like to get caught in a really bad hailstorm?

If you ask any car enthusiast what they fear most in this world, a hailstorm has to be in the top five. With the advent of cheap dash cams, we are seeing more and more videos chronicling these worst-case scenarios.

Hail is, simply put, frozen balls of rain that fall during thunderstorms. They can range in size from a pea (not terrible) to a grapefruit (yikes). In this video, substantial, golf ball-sized hail falls fast and heavy on this hapless motorist’s car.

Those giant balls of ice crack the windshield glass viciously. And we can bet there will be some impressive body damage, as well, particularly on all of the top surfaces of the car.

When a hailstorm comes, all you can hope to do is hide the car under an overpass and pray you remembered to buy comprehensive insurance coverage. No matter what happens, stay inside your car! If hail can crack a windshield and dent a roof, imagine what it can do to your body.

Hailstorms — especially of the golf ball and larger variety — have been known to cause a car to be declared a total loss due to the extent of body and glass damage. However, with advancements in weather forecasting, we now have a real chance at protecting our cars by leaving them inside until the storm passes.

If you live in an area prone to hail, call your insurance agent. You’re going to want that comprehensive coverage! Designed to cover things beyond human control, it rarely adds much to the monthly policy premium. And claims under this coverage rarely, if ever, impact your insurance rates the way an accident or ticket would.
