What Do You Think Is a Fair Price for this Time Capsule Wrangler YJ?

1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ SaharaPrices for Jeep’s first-ever Wrangler have been on the rise lately, but this loaded low-mileage example failed to find a buyer.

When I was assigned to write this article, I was pretty excited. My first Jeep was a 1992 YJ that was part of so many fun memories from my college years. One not-so-fun memory is when someone tried to steal it, but couldn’t find my hidden kill switch. Unfortunately, that didn’t stop the thieves from totally trashing a pricey steering column, but I digress.

The other week while browsing Facebook Marketplace, I stumbled across an ad for a 1995 Wrangler located nearby to me and with just 33,000 miles on the clock. This Jeep was all-stock, absolutely spotless, never had the doors or top removed, nor been off-road. The private seller’s price? A dream-crushing $35,000.

No matter how mint, the asking price for that Marketplace YJ struck me as a nosebleed high. And now, a recent auction of a similar vehicle on the AutoHunter site proves it. The subject of the AutoHunter auction is this featured 1994 Wrangler YJ with the luxe Sahara trim level. It’s traveled about 74,130 miles so far and based on how clean the undercarriage is, not many of those roads were dirt.

That’s not to say that it couldn’t have gone off-road. It’s shackle-lifted Old Man Emu suspension, larger all-terrain tires, and a honkin’ Warn winch attest to that. Since this example is a Sahara, it has the 4.0-liter High Output inline-six, mated to the excellent and durable AX15 five-speed manual transmission.

No lame slushboxes here!

To be sure, this is an extra clean, well-optioned and rust free YJ with low miles in a desirable color combination. It has the best powertrain of the square headlight Wranglers and it’s never been wrecked. Nonetheless, when the auction ended last week, the seller’s reserve price wasn’t met.

The highest bid was a respectable $13,000, which seems fair for both buyer and seller. Especially considering the recent financial uncertainty and stock market swoon sparked by President Trump’s tariffs on imported goods. That said, the seller wasn’t content to accept $13k, so this time capsule Wrangler remains available for you to perhaps re-live your own youthful memories.
