WK2 Jeep Grand Cherokee Run 10s in Quarter-Mile

Australian Jeep becomes quickest WK2 with 10.8-second time slip.

We’ve seen some drag-racing sleepers built out of Jeeps before, but this 2014 Grand Cherokee just might put classic muscle to bed. The Grand Cherokee looks bone stock at a glance; only if you peek below the back bumper will you notice the turbocharger mounted behind the rear axle. That’s good enough to propel the 5,200-pound SUV to 10-second time slips. With these passes in Australia, the right-hand-drive Jeep became the quickest WK2-chassis Jeep after a best run of 10.814 seconds @ 128.01 miles per hour. Who needs a Trackhawk, right?

Everything but the engine remains completely stock. That means it has the original eight-speed automatic transmission, driveline, and suspension. The interior even carries the sepia interior that makes the Grand Cherokee look the part of a stock SRT8. However, the horsepower tricks lay well-hidden. The first trick is E85 and an accompanying tune, along with higher-flow fuel injectors.

The other trick is the turbo running eight pounds of boost into a completely stock 6.4-liter Hemi V8. The owner estimates all of that is good for about 680 horsepower. And his first two passes come up in the low 11s, which he says is the quickest for a stock-engine WK2. But he’s not done there. Subsequent passes of 10.877 and 10.814 are the quickest for any WK2. Or so the owner wagers, and we’re inclined to believe him. That’s really moving for a two-and-a-half ton vehicle.

We have seen a few other very quick Grand Cherokees in the past. Ryan Armstrong’s 2008 Grand Cherokee SRT8, on the previous WK platform, has run HOT ROD Power Tour for several years and also competed in HOT ROD Drag Week a few times with a best time of 10.668 seconds. We don’t think it’ll be long until the Aussie WK2 is in that neighborhood. What do you think?
