I drove my JK to Boston a week ago and noticed the clunk when driving inside one of the many garages I parked. I drove back and searched this thread , bought the grease and now....no clunk...without the mod...go figure.......the NAPA girl suggested I get a siringe from Brooks or CVS and make a small hole in the boot and fill it with the 5th wheel grease...must be nice to have a woman so "smart" about vehicles around the "garage"..., but can she cook....?

I got white lithuim grease in a spray can. thats all i could get, we don't have many varieties, and to find the hardcore stuff you got to look for days. Do you think thats why the grese part didn't work? cuz i got a different grease?

yes, white lithium grease may be a heavy duty grease but like everyone was saying, 5th wheel grease increases in strength over use

I've had a clunk for a couple of days and my U-Joint blew out and I lost my axle. The worse part is that I have 5500 miles on the Jeep and this is my SECOND u-joint! Dealer fixed the last one on warranty.

Did you notice driveline vibrations before it happened? Did they give you any hastle with the spacer lift?

I've had the clunk for over 20,000 miles. Can be felt in the wheel and pedals. It has been much more pronounced since the TF 2.5BB, 33's and adjustable trackbars about 12,000 miles ago. Just seems like there is play in it but every time I check everything looks good.

I have also noticed that although my traction control initial did not come on in turns it is gradually starting to do so. Wheel is still centered. Very annoying and scary at times as well.

I’ve had clunky steering too, so I figured I would try this mod. I did complete it, but when I was doing it I think I found the real reason for my clunking.

I noticed that the plastic sleeve that is on the upper intermediate shaft had slid down out past the firewall and grommet: Here’s a picture showing how there is a gap at the firewall and grommet:

Here’s a side view:

I could pick up the steering shaft and move it around and when I let it go it clunked on the grommet.

To fix it I simply pushed the plastic sleeve:

Up to about 1” from the grommet and firewall:

I couldn’t push it any further. Can someone look to see if it stops short like that when it is properly installed? Thanks.

Thanks for checking! Guess I'll just keep an eye on it, and if it starts to slip again maybe I'll just put a clamp on the bar in front of it to keep it in place.
