I have a firepit very similar to yours. I made mine out of 4X8 blocks, the ones with holes in the middle. I take a piece of expanded metal and place over the top of mine and call it good. It will give you more of a cooking space, and you don't burn the piss out of yourself dicking around inside the walls of the pit. You should still get plenty of heat from the coals. Plus, if it does take a tad longer to cook, no worries, more time to have a another pint.
Probably my favorite thing to cook over a fire like that is to open oysters or clams up over it. When you open shell fish over a open flame, they get the smoke infused in the meat, and the texture is more firm. I love it.

That sounds cool.
Not tried shellfish yet, but sounds like I need to.
Did try grilling some burgers, then wrapping in bread dough, then baking them off.
Have to get some shellfish at the weekend.
