You could get away with short haul with O/D off. Flat ground is best and plan on stopping early. I would still recommend trans cooler and the best brake pads/rotors. I some times overload mine driving to my local camp/wheeling spot but I live in flat land and only drive about 35 miles one way with very few stops.

There is a reason the put a limit on what u can haul, everything is all well and good until u get that unsuspected blow out or someone cut u off. Even at the rated 3500 lbs I think your pushing it without any mods. Life and safety first!

Do a thread search for towing a trailer on the stock fourm. Check out the opinions and info regarding the real tow capacity of the set up. Of historical interest, the Grand Wagoneer of the 80's and 90's had very similar engine capabilities, and yet were cleared to pull 7700 lbs, which is what Jeep rated the Euro Spec JKUs to pull, with the same engine, tranny, and gearing as our Tow Package JKUs. The 2012 has the Euro Spec auto tranny cooler, which the earlier models have to add through Mopar.

I think one of the biggest concerns should be if you exceed the tow rating on the vehicle and get into an accident the insurance would not cover you and mey be responsible

Its about stability of the total towing package. There is a critical speed where sway becomes a problem. The jeeps are rated in a vary conservative way regarding stability. However, for power its not under rated based on my persona experience with my jeeps.

I would suspect that a 2012 would tow better for any give load based on the power available, but this has no effect on the critical speed where sway is a problem.

So based on what I know I believe that the 2 door can easily handle more than 2000 lbs but a jku is at the suspension limit at 3500 and clearly the powertrain would be at its knees.

I would stick with a pop up type camper, or better yet, build an off road trailer and throw a tent in there!

You are fine on weight but I think the length is what will get you, does the trailer have brakes?

Nah, keep the Jeep and get a Motorhome as was previously mentioned, then tow the Jeep!

3000lbs, towed at 65 mph only trouble was big hills had to down shift. Now I wouldn't want to do it everyday but I towed this trailer 300 miles with no trouble. I was impressed.
