Army Airborne School
Any Jarheads on here ever goto Jump School? I'm headed out there next month and just wondering what to expect. I have done my homework and research, just want some tips from the guys that have done it... I'm gonna jump out of a perfectly good aircraft.......5 TIMES
It is a little like Basic all over again. The blackhats like to pretend they are drill instructors and will attempt to run your ass off. Not a problem if you are in shape.
All in all, it is fun enough. The jump tower is fun, though it is a lot like a theme part in that you wait a hour to jump off the tower and spend 5 seconds having fun, only to wait another hour to jump again.
Even if you are not religious (I am not) that first jump, when you look up and see that chute actually did open, and then look down and see the world spinning beneath you... you will never feel closer to the divine..

Airborne! I've only got 9 static line jumps under my belt... 7 in a C-130 and 2 in a C-17... but It's the greatest experience you'll ever have! Just remember... Keep your eyes on the horizon, your feet and knees together... and no matter what... Don't Looik Down! Besides freaking yourself out... you'll put your body in an awkward position that could cause you to spin once the prop blast hits you. You'll survive... (unless the chute doesn't open)... but you'll cause the risers to twist around. I had that happen once... if you pull the risers apart, you'll untangle them.
Just listen to everything that SGT Airborne says... they want you to land safely. Also, when you're about to land... don't reach your legs for the ground... that's how people break legs... just let the ground hit you naturally with your knees slightly bent and feet together... roll through all your points of contact (you'll understand at the school.)
Good Luck Airborne!

I was a Army Parachute rigger for 8 years So I was required to be airborne Qualified and on jump status . I don't even remember how many countless Jumps I have.... Just remember that your first jump is a blast its the second one that sucks because you know that its gonna husrt when you hit the ground ( remember you hit the ground any where from 12.2 to 15 mph, and that's if there is no wind and you do everything right. .. more advise to come when I get home to my computer and can type faster
I live about 200 meters from airborne school, not too bad of a school, the days are pretty busy, LOTS of basic trainees running around, there is a subway across the street, they are renovating the barracks. As long as you are a decent runner, you shouldn't have any problems, watch out for the swing landing trainer, my buddy tore his rotator cuff landing the wrong way on it. He still finished school, but had to get surgery afterwards. Hopefully you are bringing your car with you, there isn't much to do around airborne school, and taxi cab rides are expensive!

Nope, no car. I'm flying out on Wednesday. I'd say I'm an okay runner (2 mile in 14:45). My brother lives in Birmingham, Al and plans on coming out on the weekend(s) to hang out, other than that, plan on focusing on school, and sleeping.
The school is definitely not that strenous that you will want to sleep the weekends and evenings away. You will pass the school, you shouldn't worry about that, it's not like there are any tests, as long as you can fall properly during training, when you jump for real nobody is grading you on how you fall. There will probably be a couple of other Marines there, get in good with them and maybe you could car pool and go grab some chow off post. You will be doing alot of walking around the area.
