AEV Front bumper on a UK spec JK

I new this was going to be expensive but I didn't expect it to cost me a new camera too! Dropped the ruddy thing and it didn't bounce!! :naw:
Anyway I love the bumper....
I also fitted the skid plate and a warn 9500ti. At some point and I'll sort the wiring out putting fixed internal and external switches and do away with the crappy wandering lead.

I left off the front caps as we do not have the crush cans on our front bumper and the aproach anlge is much better without them. Hopefully the lift kit and wheel/tyre combo are not to far off.

Ohh and here's a crappy pic of the 100" so it doesn't feel left out!

I wish I could get that winch in the AEV bumper, they are such much better.

congrats :thumbsup:that looks very nice.
what is the powdercoat like? do you think it will hold up against the salt?
also with the winch, what the difference between the 9.5ti and 9.5si apart from the price:dontknow2: is there a soleniod with the ti and the si has a digital box?
thanks for the pics and i hope you lift/wheels get here soon:yup:

ps. that 100 looks cool, i was thinking of getting a new one instead of jk but its not very comfortable and they rust real bad. what do you like better??
cheers
dom

oh and how are you running the license plate?????

nick p 05-17-2009 02:11 PM

I've had the L/Rover for over 15 years originally as a V8 110 and then rebuilt it in 2001 on a genuine chassis shortening it to 100" and then getting it galvenised. I would struggle to let it go and it has been an utterly brilliant vehicle. It is however hopelessly out dated. I could have bought a new 90 instead of the JK, but, without bigging it up my 100" is a superior vehicle to anything L/R have ever produced.

With a 3" ish lift and the ability to run 35" tyres and probably a 2009 V V T 5.7 hemi I think it should make a worthy sucessor!:brows:

The si has the

M.O.S.F.E.T. (Metal-Oxide Semiconductor Field- Effect Transistor
The most regular failing on Warn winches in the past has been their solenoids. On the competion vehicles and the 100" we run Allbright contactor units which are far more reliable. I looked at an si but it is a lot more expensive, were not in stock and this vehicle is not going to do 50 pulls a day like the 100" has and the buggy does, if I was going that route I'd have bought a Warn bumper and an 8274

The powder coating is very well finished, If I were being picky I would say the welding could have been neater. The

Number plate........ I had cable tied it on for the weekend, pulled it off to take some pics. This and the winch wander lead are the two things outstanding. Going to play about with different sized and shaped no plates next week. This is the rear now!

i found a pic of the aev bumper in france, they mount the no. plate near the skidplate. but not sure how. also i guess you would need to make it removable it you put it there. just a thought. and are those the stock tyres that come with the rubicon? mine came with bridgeston duelers and i have to say that they worked surprisingly well in the snow.

they have tonnes of nice jks including a 2dr hemi. :brows:

Nice! Thats how the long-nosed Euro bumper should have looked from the factory.

Crush cans integrated?

looks good without the crush cans Attachment 24335:thumbsup:

Thanks for the picture, its certainly another option.
May have to ponder the number plate issue and await inspiration!

Yep the tyres are Good Year and whilst I was a bit dubious they have proved to be a pretty good all round tyre, that said I haven't used it in snow or any deep mud. Should have the 255/85x16 BFG MT's mounted on my mates new Compomotive wheels which I'll try to post a pic end of the week, looking forward to that as I hope to have the same setup as my everyday tyre.
Getting a tad impatient waiting for the AEV rhd 3.5" lift kit now!

ok. im still wondering what tyre to run down the line. initially i was gonna go with 305/65r17 bgf all terrain on the aev pintlers but im having second thoughts. ive never run an M/T tyre on the road so im wondering what to do:thinking:
i use the jeep for everyday driving and mainly country roads for now, but when i start uni im gonna be doing a regular trip from edinbrugh to aberdeen about 200 miles. and also i use them in quite thick snow/ice in winter. the aev's will be the wheels i run most of the time. im considering a good winter tyre for the stock 18's but cant find any. are narrow tyres better for snow? do you have any recommendations for what to do?

it must suck waiting on aev lift:sad2: when did you order everything:dontknow2:

Ordered the stuff mid March, bank transfer was circa 20th. Not the end of the earth but having paid a fair chunk of money out I want the kit on and to start using it. I and a few mates have organised a trip to Scotland (NW of Fort William) in July and desperately want the kit on for then!

Tyres........ My thoughts for what its worth.. For hard packed snow/ice you need a narrow tyre reasonably open (AT ish) tread with lots of siping. If you look at the tres they run on rally cars on snow/ice stages you get the idea. For deep virgin snow you want a wider section heavy pattern (MT ish) Because we normally get a mixture of both you can never get a tyre that excells in all conditions. I have run Michelin,Cooper, General and BFG on 4x4s over the years and way prefer a MT tyre. I stll like a relatively narrow version for the majority of use here hence going for a 255/85x16 35/37x12.50s look cool but I'm not conviced on the congested roads of the UK when the weather is crap is the best way forward. Problem is 255/85x16 really need a 7" rim hence the Compomotives.
All 4x4 tyres rated M&S are designed for use in colder conditions and because of this the rubber compound still grips in minus conditions something that cannot be said for a normal car tyre. Because of this whatever you choose your ahead of the majority + you have a top 4x4:thumbsup:

thanks i sure do like the look of a wide tyre. i think im gonna get the bgf at's but the only size that is e marked (which is a 33") is a 305/65r17. ie 12" wide
they have a 35" but that is even wider. they will stick out about an inch, do you think anyone will notice:dontknow2:

and ill get a set of soft compoud narrow tyres for the stockers.

i certainly have not been bored to death, quite the opposite:thumbsup:

did they have the rhd lift kit in stock?

nick p 05-18-2009 01:07 PM

The police only seem worried when the tread sicks out and is uncovered. The bulge of the sidewall sticking out beyond the wheel arch will not cause any greif in my experience.

They did have stock but it was earmarked for AUS, there seems to be some delay with the second batch:dontknow2:

I meant to say yesterday that the BFG MTs are on short supply in many sizes in the UK because they are switching over to the KM2. The official date was mid may but I was told in March by Southam tyres that going on previous experience of Michelin/BFG it was more likely to be August. These will then come through Emarked and EU legal.

ok i was wondering if km2's were gonna be e marked. the thing i am concerned about is driving with them in the wet, black ice. are they really that different to an A/T or are they not bad. especially with the JK being rear wheel drive. would i have to take is a lot easier in the wet?

oh and i also noticed that you side markers(indicatiors on fenders) are the US spec ones. is that what all uk rubi's come like?

nick p 05-19-2009 12:23 PM

I just ordered the US spec ones from the local dealer. About £12.00 each. The original lamp wiring plug fits on, plus now it's pretty well flush.
I prefer the BFG MT to he BFG AT. The ultimate level of grip in the wet is less but the breakaway is far more progessive and you have to be really doing something silly to get that far. My 5.2 100" is pretty quick for an old L/R and I enjoy driving it in how shall I put it......in a spirited way. Not in towns and built up areas but on the A and B roads of Wales where I used to do a lot of driving. I'm also more than happy to drive at 90 mph hour after hour on the French auto routes (wet or dry) when doing events like the Cevenol.
On snow and ice the most important thing is driving well within the limits of the vehicle, the driver and most importantly the horde of clueless muppets out there on the roads.

If your set on an AT I think there are options that give far better road manners than the BFG, not sure in the right size though? Have you driven a 4x4 on MTs they are noisier for sure!

Nick

nick p 05-19-2009 12:28 PM

The ABS, TC & SC are also very good at keeping you on the straight and narrow. Spent plenty of time playing with a hire JK in the US before buying one here. :brows: Out there all Rubicons come on BFG MTs but admttedly it is a different tread pattern to the KM2.

Nick

thanks. i also like driving speedy, but i do take it easy (if not a bit too easy) in the corners, mainly due to the ridiculus body roll the jk has. (my other car is a lowered classic mini cooper so it really feels different.:rotflmao1:)
im not to botherd about noise, for long journeys music will drown it out.
i hope they make some decent sizes in the KM2's so i can mabye get a 285/70r17 which wont stick out at all.

oh and this thread has gone WAY of topic. i'm sorry:blush: but the EU section is not very active.:dontknow2:

nick p 05-19-2009 12:42 PM

LOL. The Jk is like a gocart compared to the L/R :eek2:
Must try to grt my mate Giles to post a bit more, he has done some interesting stuff to his JK. I'll get a few pics next time its in! Your spot on though it is rather quiet in this section.

Had an email yesterday saying parts should be with them within a week. Fingers crossed!!

Also had an email from Clayton which was interesting......

Hello. We have an AEV 3 inch JK sitting in our shop right now. The kit has
no adjustment at all. If your looking for the best way to set a proper
caster angle in the front you should get the front upper arms. If your
looking to get a stronger, better flexing arm, and be able to move the axle
back and forth to better fit tires, then the front lowers are ok.

The current AEV customer bought the AEV kit because he wanted a simple to
install kit. Now he added our lowers to properly set his wheelbase. Then he
bought the front uppers to be able to set a proper caster angle. The rear
uppers and lowers are not that important on a 4 door. They do help with
flex, strength and once again being able to move the axle back a little to
compensate for lift height.

Our arms use either currie rebuildable johnny joints, or cleveite
mechanically bonded rubber bushings. They are very tough and usually don't
need to be changed for 4-5 years.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Adam
Clayton Off Road Mfg.
Difficult to get a feel for what is needed until I get the kit fitted, but then I dont want to be stuck for weeks waiting for arms. I'm not that keen on cam bolts or slotting the axle casing. Bugger!!

Nick

scotlandjk 06-04-2009 12:05 PM

well i hope you get it soon its been a while:crazyeyes:

hmmm, from my reading of these informative forums, i think most people would want to replace the front lowers instead of the cam bolts. and if your replacing the driveshaft, then change all of them.
also from reading aussie forums who have the RHD kit, and are using the cam bolts, they say that the street manners are perfect, you just need to set the one of the alignments(i think castor) to just over 6 deg for 33's and its good to go.

if/when i ever get round to ordering the aev kit im probably gonna go all out and get new driveshafts, full adjustable arms and the kit: just to make sure i can still drive the jeep and not have to have a driveshaft fail and be waiting weeks/months with the jeep off the road.

but i may consider just getting the aev kit and front lowers as a starting point.

i think the main brands to consider for adjustable arms are teraflex, currie and maybe clayton. i would get the terflex personally.
aev says that they are thinking about making adjustables so maybe try the cam bolt and see what they come up with. but then you would need to weld new washer thing to the slit joint.
