Varmint / Target Rifle
I've mostly been a shotgun owner and have only had a Ruger 10/22 for playing around at target shooting.
I'd like to get something with a little more bang (fun and longer distances) for target shooting but don't necessarily want a full blown target rifle.
I have been looking at the Savage Model 12 Varmint rifles. They seem to have really good reviews. If I get one I think I will go for the 223 Rem since it is pretty common and seems to be somewhat economical for shooting.
The Savage I am looking at is far from cheap, but I want to get something nice.
I am also going to need a scope and don't know much about picking one. There is a gun club less than 5 minutes from the house that has a ranges up to 500 yards.

I have seen a Savage model 12 in .223 and .204 do murderous things to varmints. The adjustable accu-trigger in the savage model 12 is IMHO the best value in factory triggers out there. For varmints, I prefer the .204 over the .223 because the .204 has a flatter trajectory and very low felt recoil with the 32 and 40 gr Vmax rounds.
3x9 scopes are good for the ruger 10/22, I prefer 4x14 or 8 x 25 power for longer range center fire varmint rifles. Scope choice is a matter of personal preference and like Jeeps only limited by the amount of $$ you want to spend. I prefer Leupold, they are designed in my hometown, have great optics and a lifetime no questions asked warranty.

I doubt I will do any actual varmint hunting. If I am going to hunt it will be something I eat. Can't think of any varmint recipes right now.
Still doing research and the 223 does seem like the most reasonably priced ammo for my needs.
Thanks for the input.

You may not want to go this small, but just for grins, have a look look at the 17 HMR. I know a couple guys that absolutely love them. As far as scopes go, don't skimp.....if you're gonna get a nice gun, then put a nice scope on it. Can't go wrong with Leupold....or higher, Swarovski, Ziess....

Surprised I have one? I know lots of liberals that have guns. As well as conservatives that don't. No surprise.
