Mossberg 500 or Remington 870

I am looking to get into duck hunting and thought these 2 guns would be good guns to start out with. I would be hunting in va and md. Anyone have any opinions or experiences with either of these firearms?

You can't go wrong with an 870. It'd be a plus if you could get it in super mag to fire 3.5" shells. There are a lot of geese in that area.

Make sure it has a good durable finish.. I've always known Remingtons to rust a little easier.

take a look at the rem 887 have 3.5 in mag and got a coating on to prevent rust. Or if you are set on those 2 the 870 like the pump action lot better

Go with the 870

The only pro a mossberg has over the Remington is the ambidextrous safety.

Mossberg over 870 everytime. Lots of deployments with a 500 never a jam!

870s and benellis are for posers.

I got myself a Remington 870 superman(love being able to use a 3.5'' for the geese), I have had it for about 5 years now and have not had any problems. I am out in the blind a ton when duck season rolls around and that 870 never let me down. People claim that you never need to clean it...I never followed this but it takes a lot of beating on throughout the season and I only clean her at the end of each duck season. I would say go with the 870 hands down, I passed her down to my little brother once I bought a Browning Maxus. Awesome starter gun for the price

Find a range that rents these types of shotguns and try them out before buying one. The 870 and 500 are both excellent shotguns but you'll need to decide for yourself. To each his own
