I have a 2001 GC also - went through the same thing. Replaced the water pump and the thermostat and it fixed the overheating issues. Still have a little bit of the rushing water sound on acceleration - never figured out what it is.

The pump and thermostat is not too hard to do - I have detailed instructions somewhere if you want.

I don't have an answer- but peel up the carpet on both drivers and passenger side....is it damp under there? I get that rushing sound also.

Pull the thermostat and run it without one. That will narrow it down.

Also, while it is cool, remove the radiator cap. Then fill it up to the top. Leave the cap off and turn the Jeep on. Sounds like you're low on coolant and have an air pocket. With the cap off and it running, it should suck down the level. Refill as nessisary. If it starts to raise up, turn it off, wait a minute, and repeat. This should help.

I don't know about this but have to wonder if it is air in the system after the radiator work that allows the water rushing sound? Try making sure the radiator is completely burped and see if that stops the noise.

Sometimes if you get air in your system it also can get stuck in the heater core. When you accelerate you can here it bubbling. It wont hurt anything if its stuck in there, just annoying
