President antennas
Anybody have any experience with the president line of antennas?
i never really cared for the look of the fiberglass antennas, so I ordered the President Maryland antenna, supposed to be tunable, 58 inch steel whip |
Finally got everything hooked up, so far I have a high swr, 2.5 range with the antenna rings adjusted all the way to the bottom, over 3 with them higher up,.
will play with the whip heigth some this weekend and recheck grounds and scrape more powder coating off the antenna bracket, may be pictures to come. I used spare tire mount from evo, it tilts the antenna a little to the right instead of being straight up, but it isn't bad, adds a little character |
Picture please? Getting ready to buy a firestik but if president looks great I might consider it. |
I'll try to get some pictures up, but so far I can't get my swr below about 2 1/4, I may change to a firestick and see how it does, even though I like the looks of a stainless antenna better than a fiberglass one, I may have to go with functional instead of looks

Ok, I ordered a front fender/ under hood bracket, I'm determined to make this antenna work, I hope after getting it out from between the spare and tailgate it might work a little better
|
Will have to get more pictures, but mounted on the hood/ fender, it works, president McKinley radio and president Maryland antenna, 9 ft firestick firering coax and a 1.0 swr.
I actually liked the antenna mounted on the spare tire bracket, but I can live with it up front with the better performance |
Hmmm my gut feeling is that your SWR is bad because of where the antenna is mounted. Also does not help that your antenna is base loaded (coil at base) and pretty much surrounded by tire, metal, glass.... You may wind up cutting it way way down and never get a good match.
Up front is a trick our buddies in Oz like to do, In the old days when cars had pretty crappy filters on the ignition you wound up with a lot of noise from the ignition. Still being old school I wonder about that but that is a much better location. Back in the 'old' days we would use a bumper mount on the rear bumper and a 9 foot whip. Or if you have buddies that can fabricate up a simple bracket off the tailgate hinge that would be better. (see my post) Er wait a sec, Jeep changed the tailgate hinges didn't they.... Other mount was to put a ball mount on the body tub but that means drilling 4 holes in the body and that becomes a potential rust spot. |
