Default 5 pin relay vs 4 pin relay

Will it make a difference to wire up auxiliary lights with a 5 pin relay? Or does it not really matter

It doesn't matter. You will just have an extra pin not being used. Just make sure you put your output wire on terminal 87 if it is a normally open relay or 87a if it is a normally closed relay.

So I could just cut the extra wire as short as possible & be perfectly fine?

If you are using a harness connector for a 5 pin and don't need the extra pin then yes you can just cut it short so it is out of the way.
