50" Light Bar Wind Noise?
I stopped a guy today to ask him about his 50" light bar and his response was not what I expected so I wanted to ask others who have added them. He said the light was great, but there was a substantial amount of wind noise from it when driving. I even saw he had added a hood bug deflector behind it to help. He said it's better now, but still distracting. Anybody else notice this issue?

I had a 50 and had the same issue. It was so bad I could not even drive. I had the softtop on so I could not tell you what it was like with the hardtop because I ended up selling it. It sounded like somebody was beating a broom on top of the jeep.

I put strips of door guard along the fins of mine it's not bad at all. You can tell it's there but I go 60+ mph on a daily basis and don't have any real complaints.
I didn't drive it without the door guard, so I can't comment on what it was like before but I know it is a common issue for the bars to make noise. |
I bought 3 packages of the 3m door guard as well.. I cut it to different lengths and stuck it on randomly on the fins.. It cured it after a couple times of moving the pieces around. On mine, the biggest difference was the dead center of the fins..

On mine I tilted it in such a way when the wind hit it it screamed so loud and high pitch I thought I had blown a bearing on my fan or my tire was coming off
|
I wonder if some mounts are more quiet than others? Positioning the lights closer to the windshield?

Not a 50 inch... but I experience turbulence also. Not too bad but since it's a soft top I do notice it. When the top is off I can hear the whistling sound ... I'll experiment with 3M tape or silicone later.. hasn't drove me crazy yet.

Mine sounds like a scary movie sound board. It doesn't bother me.
|
Mine's loud but not unbearable.

Just put door edge molding in the fins, it will stop the sound do the entire top bottom and middle fins, then cut 4" slivers and randomly place them on the remaining fins

Sent from my obama monitoring device I have all ready got rid of the whistle, this will take care of the extra wind noise? |
Anyone have pics of how they mounted the door stripping? Just mounted my 50"in. light bar yesterday and it whistles like crazy at speeds of 60mph and over.

Update feb 2018: Success - it was the tilt!!
I had tried the door trim approach on the lower 3 fins, from end to end, without success. I read today about a number of different approaches on the fins: foam, caulk, weather strip, garage door strip, deflector, etc. All had mixed reviews.
Today, after reading all of that, I went out and tilted my bar forward, by about 10-15 degrees, pointing it more at the nose of the jeep (vs. straight ahead). MAGIC. No more whistle! I seriously just want to go drive aimlessly around town, and listen to the sweet, sweet hum of my tires (which I haven't heard up to this point due to the light bar). Not knocking the other approaches, but PLEASE, PLEASE at least give this one a try - it could very well save time/money (for other worthwhile mods ) |
Yes, tilting the light bar slightly down is the best way to minimize thw whistle..
|
Everyone I know that has one, makes noise. Like Ryan said, tilting it helps a little.
|
Did the door trim (52" Bar) - that got rid of 99% of the whistle, how about the turbulence it makes across the top? Using Fishbone bracket, puts the top of the light real close to the top of the roof - thoughts?

I wrapped the back of mine with carbon fiber vinyl from 3M and modded the mount to be as close to the windshield as possible. It is 100% silent.
FYI this is a new option also (plasitc wind defuser for light bars) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B075M147YD/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?psc=1 |
Black duct tape covering the bottom 4 fins. Zero noise.
