So I'm throwing in a GE brand CB radio in my JK. I made it through the passenger side firewall port, but the in line fuse holder will not fit past the interior body panneling under the cowl. In the process of trying to get it through, the fuse holder was damaged. The replacements I found at the parts store all have much larger gauge wire. I guess what I need to know if it's safe to splice these two different wire gauges together. I'd really hate to catch my daily driver on fire. Anybody have some advise?

 

You'll be fine as long as you insulate your splice...electrical tape and heat shrink wrap should do the trick. Been there, done that, good luck!

 

That's kinda what I was thinking, but I'm a newb at automotive electric stuff. I suppose I'll be doing that over the crimp on terminal connector. Thanks for the input man.

 

Hey no problem, I'm scared as hell monkeying around with some of the new electrical systems...I just knew the answer because I've done the exact same thing in the past and did the same fix, worked like a charm!

 

The larger the gauge wire will handle higher amps without being damaged. So yes it's ok to go from smaller gauge wire to larger gauge wire. When I ran my power line from the battery through the fire wall, I spliced in to the original power line from the cb and left the fuse inside the jeep under the dash. Another thing you might want to do is seal up the hole around the wire in the fire wall water can get in.
