Default Corroded Light Sockets?

Yesterday I noticed my right blinker on my '07 Rubi was flashing in hyper mode but the left was fine. This AM I started checking it out and the right rear blinker was out.

Not a big deal, I got a replacing and took the housing apart to swap the bulb. Once I got inside, I noticed both filaments were in tact in the bulb, but when I pulled the bulb out it was full of corrosion (like the green crap that builds on your battery terminal).

I pulled the left housing off and saw the exact thing there, although that blinker was still working. I cleaned both sockets with an electrical switch cleaner/lube/protectant and blew it out with my compressor.

Is there anything else preventative I should do before putting it back together (put lithium grease in the socket .etc)? What causes that crap to build up in the first place?

I checked out the trailer plug the winch leads, the backup lights & battery & they all looked fine, so if it doesn't work when I get it back together, what should I look at next?

I bow to your wisdom forum of all answers!!

That was my first thought, but everything was totally clean, the seals were in tact and in great condition and it was completely dry. Also, the backup lights had none at all.

I noticed when I switched over to led tail lights signal lights warning lights etc. My wires were very dirty and brittle. I dont know if thats low quality wires or what. I havent looked at the headlight wiring or sockets yet.

You could out some dielectric grease in there before you reassemble. That should help keep chemical reaction between the two different metals to a minimum, and insure a good weatherproof contact. In fact there may have been some sort of a compound installed at the factory, which might account for the amount of green "stuff" you found in there. Either way, the proper cleaning you gave them will go a long way toward preventing the same issue in the future.

Thanks guys. I got it all back together last night and it works great... almost.

My third brake light & mount went away with my 37" tires & spare mount, so in order to have a center brake light I bought a recover hitch light and plugged it into the the flat 4 trailer light connector.

Now the signals and brake lights work properly, but when I turn on the left blinker, the third brake light flashes with it. That doesn't happen with the right blinker.

I guess l probably need to check the front signals too?? What a mess.

Thats definitely a wrong wiring issue if the high mount brake light is flashing.

I'll check that. I never noticed it doing that before this other issue so I figured there was a short somewhere. I'll get the front turn signals checked out this weekend too to make sure I don't have the same thing happening there as well.
