A different approach iPad install..
While I very much like the install that uses e pad as a primary source, it wasn't logical for me. I have a Kenwood Excelon 819 unit that does everything imaginable, DVD, iPod, USB, backup cam, nav, cd, am/fm, satellite, and most importantly in my case, a very complex EQ. I just couldn't give it all up, but I had to have my pad..
Mind you, it's still a work in progress and the current setup snugly, but functional.. I will of course update as I make progress.
SO..i decided to work around it.. With the dash kit that I used to install my flip out, there is a pocket for whatever misc items directly below it. I cut a piece of wood to fit inside that pocket snug to then hold a stand coming off of it at an angle.. Picture this stand as like a music stand..
I wanted a piece of good sturdy wood to be the backing and support for the pad to lay against at an angle, and yet not be too thick or heavy. This is where the wood part of a clip board came into play. I cut the clip piece off and cut an 8.5 x9.5 piece and secured it to the angled side of the pocket block. Next, I used a strip of cabinet molding, set the bottom of the clip board piece into a groove of a piece of cabinet molding. That was wide enough to hold the pad in it's case so I don't nave to take it in and out when I want to use it in my car.
I'd like to reiterate that the set up is quite ugly right now, but it's temporary to test it and make sure it is exactly when I want.. When I decide that, I will disassemble it all, wrap each piece individually with fabric( probably black suede on the stand part and a textured vinyl on the pocket block to allow it to grip better inside) , and reconnect them. I built the setup to hold the pad in the landscape position, with the home button/connection site on the passenger side as the iPod cable comes out of the glove box. I didn't want to hard mount the stand just because I want to be able to take it out at times.
When considering the angle of the stand, I made it somewhere around 45 deg so that I could still reach under the stand to access the ac controls. I am also still able to get some air flow from the two vents that are there.
Lastly, I am using the iPod cable that came with my Kenwood unit. Considering the iPad isn't an iPod technically, when it is plugged in, a message appearsmon the pad screen saying that this device isn't supported by iPad. And the Head unit says "Reading..", which in the past, meant that it wouldn't play. Apple is releasing a software update for the iPad on nov 4th that will allow it to be compatible with car stereo systems. So if any of you have attempted to connect it like this with an iPod cable on your radio and couldn't , this issue should be resolved thursday once you get the update. ** the update also has a ton more awesome features!!! check it out**
I will post the pics in just a few minutes as they are on my iPhone and I'm on the iPad right now. Please let me know what you think..
PS... I am a girl so please refrain from the "Hey man, nice job..." intro. Thanks!

Pocket.
Now you need to modify everything behind the dash so that you can make it a slide in setup. Leave the iPad mounted and just slide it into a cubby/hiding in the dash sorta like what your main screen on the stereo does.
Nice mod though I like it.
