I don't really care what your opinions are about Apple.

I have a 4ch amp for speakers, and another amp for my sub. Next step is Headunit.

Over a traditional stereo an iPad can...

Hold 64 gigs of music and movies
Wifi and service
Essentially have a comp on me at all times
Apps (maps, trails, pandora)
Works outside of vehicle.

It's an alternative to a mygig. And The only aftermarket Headunit that would be an alternative to this would be like the pioneer appradio.

I'm curious what I would need to go
iPad mini (new smaller plug)- 3 sets of RCA outputs - remote amp turn on.

I would like to remove the stock Headunit I have.

I actually have a buddy, who works on my audio system and he works for a custom audio shop. He actually has an iPad as his headunit and custom built a dash panel to incorporate the iPad as his headunit. I also want to say he can roll down his windows from his iPhone, but I know he can from the iPad.

It could automatically sync with your home when you pull into the garage and turn on the lights in the house; with the right apps and a Bluetooth hook up for the OBDII port you could get important information about your vehicle, perhaps even change shift points as needed. I don't think all of the peripheral hardware is quite there, but it's coming. Car stereos are pretty useless actually when you think about how much space they take up and how little they really do.

iPad mini with the JBL MS-8 is a sick combo! I have installed the iPad in a Toyota tundra with the ms-8 and a 12inch sub under the rear seat. Sound quality is amazing and you can purchase music on the fly from iTunes or just YouTube vids whenever you want! Or use google maps (or iMaps?) whatever! Such a useful upgrade, and the Mac mini is THE perfect size for a head unit.
I am seriously considering losing the Aftermarket HU for the mini. So slick

Does the mini have the GPS transponder and cellular capability? When I bought my first iPad only the version with the cellular support (that is, not wi-fi only) also had the gps chip.

Trust me, I am an Apple person. We have two MacBook Pro's, three iPad's and two iPhones. If i could figure out how to put my iPad in my dash without paying a crap load of money I would. But I do not see the need to go out and buy the mini to do it.

I gotta say I'd like to see someone do this. The mini is the perfect size for a dash and you can pick up a bluetooth OBD II connector with a free app to monitor the JK.

I know it's not a jeep. But here is a photo from my buddy's shop, they did a regular iPad in the dash of a 300 srt8 I'm sure something similar could be done with the mini.

I know you lose the the regular radio and sat radio unless you have the Sirius app on the iPad. Not sure on the speaker connections but you are limited, as far as music, to just what the iPad capability is so pandora etc. However, there are apps out there where you can stream radio stations from all over the world.
