Not true for the Bad Elf Pro. It has its own LCD and connects over Bluetooth. I use it and Gaia maps for GPS and topo maps with my iPad mini. It's a great combination. Wicked fast and accurate. I'm usually locked into 11+ GPS satellites using WAAS.

I'm thinking of doing the same setup with motion x but a question I have is say your out in the woods how does your iPad get a good connection for the GPS
