Ipod device
Hi!
I was searching an Ipod device or interface to connect to the standard radio of the JK. It seems that the ones I found just connnect to the radio, but all the controls are still on the Ipod device. I'm looking for an interface that allow me to control play, skip etc directly from the radio controls. Any idea? Thank you Franco - Italy PS: Yers I know that I can connect the ipod directly to the radio via AUX!! |
As far as I know the only way to do this would be to change the standard JK head unit out for an aftermarket one unfortunately.

Yep..the factory kit only provides power I believe. You really have to go aftermarket if you want control via the HU.
Edit: Indeed. Factory kit description: iPod Interface Kit - NTG4 style radio. Provides FM bounded transmission of music files through the vehicle's audio system. iPod music file navigation is maintained by the iPod click wheel control pad. |
Most of the aftermarket ipod setups are for older factory stereos with the remote mount CD changers, or an option for remote mount setup. Since a lot of newer cars have the cd changer right in the head unit itself, it's getting harder to find ipod kits, unless the manufacturer had ipod users in mind...
As far as the jeep goes, I see 3 options: 1: Auxilary input (I know, not an option for you.... But I personally like being able to sit the ipod in my lap, and use it like a remote) 2: Aftermarket head unit... There are a lot of head units out there today that were designed around an ipod. One member on here has that new Alpine deck that's really nice, I'm sure he might be able to reccomend it. 3: Harman Kardon Drive + Play might be a nice touch... Gives you a control wheel you can mount anywhere (If I were rich enough, I'd develop and patent a shift knob version of their control wheel... I'll sue all you for stealing my idea, if you do though) and it has a nice display to mount too... I stumbled across a new FM transmitter for the ipod the other day, which actually transmits radio text signals too, so you can see the name of the song on the stereo.... Pretty cool... |
Ok...it seems that I will go for a good aftermarket solution!!
I already have in my other Land Cruiser what I need...at this point I will do an open hart transplant! The fact is tha the dimension are a little different. Is there a console or an adaptor that allow me to to a clean job? Franco- Italy I have to admitt that the regular radio has a lack of power especially with the top down! |
I have an Alpine HU (CDA-9887) with their ipod cable. I've routed the ipod cable to the glove box and it works well. There's even enough slack to pull the ipod all the way to the drivers seat if I need to.
If you search this forum, there's someone who ran their ipod into the center console. I rally liked that idea and it was a sharp job, but I haven't had time take the center console apart and wire mine up that way. At this point, I'm happy with my setup. |
Check out the Harmon Kardon Drive+Play. Only $99 and it is a simple install.
Mount the controller on the console. http://my.project-jk.com/data/507/medium/PICT00391.JPG Mount the display above the rearview mirror. The iPod can either live in the glovebox or the center console. |
