Default mp3 cd compatibility

Aloha From Hawaii,

Been a jeep owner for over 10 years, started out with a YJ (which my brother now owns) my wife has a Grand Cherokee, my dad a Liberty. Jeeps run in our family.

Just bought a JK Sahara, absolutely in love with it (better than my YJ). so I have a question though.

I have owned mp3 capable stereo's in the past and used them without much problems.

Has any one burnt an mp3 cd (not a regular audio cd) and used it sucessfully in their stock JK stereo. I keep getting disc read errors. I have read the manual on proper mp3 cd compatibility and still get errors.

The main problem I am having is that the CD's work sometimes but not all the times. I have tried multiple discs all with similiar problems.

Anyone else having problems or is it my Stereo possibly defective.

Any info would be helpful.

I've not had any problems with mp3's not playing. However, I have noticed the that discs I burn from iTunes have their ID3 tags scrambled (I think there isn't a backward-compatible ID3 tag to the mp3's I import into it).

Check the file format of what you're writing to disc-- if they are m4p or m4a files, they won't play (those are the newer format iTunes uses by default).

If you're writing plain-old mp3 files, and writing them to a CD in standard format (ISO 9660 I think?) they should read fine.

Default too fast, too cheap ?

I've also seperated mp3's to folders and burned to a disk for playback, without problems. I first ran my mp3's through a freeware program called MP3TAG (google it) and blanked out all info except title, album and artist. It seems to give me a cleaner display. I do the same with files going to my Creative ZenMicro.

I will say that I did burn some disks in the past on high speed write with cheap CD's ( compUSA) that you could practically see through, that would not play in the office.

Last week I cancelled the MyGig -grrrrr that's a different thread.
So i reverted back to the Infinity 6 disc system that advertises MP3 and DVD video right on the fron of the unit. Boy is that misleading!
So even though I haven't received my Jeep yet I figured I could start converting some favrites in MP3 and put all of my music onto DVD's of MP3's = WRONG!
Don't even try it.
I took my Staples DVD+R with (3) MP3s (no iTunes stuff) on it, and I drove over to the dealership and I asked if they had an Infinty 6 disc That I could test it on.
The Infinity pulled the disc in fine, and recognized it as a DVD. It would not play. It would not eject. It would not switch to FM or AM. It wouldn't do a thing. We couldn't even change the clock.
The sales guy was very professional, but you could tell he was cheezed-off - because he had to deliver this thing in 4 hours to the customer.
Well I cooly strutted right out the door while he scrambled to get a tech to pull the head unit and cover to manually remove the disc. He happily reported that the unit works normally.
Now maybe I used the wrong something - but I doubt it.
Here are some more of the details, but I'd advise against attempting to run DVD's of MP3's on the OEM Infinity system.

Nero 6 SmartStart, selected Audio DVD, browsd to clean MP3's (again no iTunes junk here) and added (3) songs. Staples single layer 4.7Gb DVD+R at up to 8X. This test disc worked fine in a PC.

There are different recordable DVD formats available-- DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW.

I'm not sure which one(s) the 6-disc head unit accepts, but there ARE people on this forum who have burned DVD discs of MP3 files and played them fine. So maybe it doesn't like DVD+R?

The big gripe I've heard about the 6-disc head unit is... no random button! But the random button on the single disc non-dvd head unit isn't all that random either from my experience, so the trade-off isn't that bad.

ALSO-- I'd recommend trying a disc with more data on it, and verifying that you aren't leaving the disc open for adding files later (i.e. close the disc, or "single session disc") It probable shouldn't make a difference, but a 4+GB capacity disc with only 5-10MB of data on it may be seen as empty by the dumb head unit...?

I just read this thread hoping to learn a few tricks because I had issues with my 6 disc DVD player, in that I had written a test CD loaded to the brim with MP3s, all nicely organized in sequence by album and track number (but without any playlists or folders)... well, the head unit said to hell with my organization, and sorted all the tracks by track number and then by track title... so that sucked.

I just picked up a pack of DVD-Rs from Staples (the owner's manual says the 6 DVD system can read both DVD- and + formats), and want to start filling my Jeep with my MP3 collection, but don't really know how I'll have to organize things so that the head unit will read them in the sequence I want... any ideas? The owner's manual is less than worthless in this regard, and I'm new to the realm of playing MP3s anywhere other than my computer.

Can I simply burn a disc with a separate folder for each "album" and maybe attach a numeric prefix to each folder name so that they show up in the sequence I want? Any thoughts? Help a wannabe audiophile... please! Thanks.

it works fine for me, i have 6 dvd's full of mp3's

you dont have to have anything fancy or do anything odd to get it to work in my experience. I literally just drag and drop the artists folders onto a blank dvd. no nero, no itunes. Just open the explorer, put the mp'3s you want on it, and burn it. Worked the first time, works everytime :P

perhaps by burning an "audio dvd" its confusing the player. i dunno. Just make a data dvd to try.

I would try the folder route. There are buttons on the head unit for you to browse the folders (list, I think?); I've used an old CD I burned of MP3s in folders, and that seemed to work okay.

You may be onto something there. DVD-Audio is a different format than DVD-Video & DVD-ROM.

DVD-ROM (or data DVD) is what the head unit expects when looking for MP3 files, I'd think.
