Problem with new fogs...

Hi everyone,

I just replaced my factory fogs with Bosch Compact 100s (55W). For some reason, the fogs won't stay on -- they blink on, then turn off. They turn on again in a very erratic pattern, but they won't stay on. Anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Thanks!

Did you check the connections on the relay? or maybe a bad fuse?

Factory wiring. I just changed the connectors -- and fabbed a new bracket to fit the AEV bumper, of course.

The wiring is rated for maybe half that much current, so the system is trying to protect itself. In the old days, you would have blown a fuse by now.
Ah. Yeah, I was wondering. Then again, I checked the fuse box, but didn't find one for the fogs. I'd rather blow a fuse - it would have been easier to diagnose! :-) Still, I wonder why a single 55W light (leaving the other un-plugged) didn't work.

Thanks,
js.

I believe that the factory fogs are somewhere around 35w. The new 55w is pulling too much current. You will need to relay the new fogs directly to the battery for power and use the factory switch to activate the relay.

Ok, here is one for you.... I have the same problem with the factory (Mopar) replacement fog lights. They told me it was the computer not recognizing the new hardware and they reprogrammed the computer. Nice for one day or during daylight. Otherwise, still same problems as described in this thread. I had factory foglights originally....

Were they "exact replacement"? If not the new lights may be pulling to many watts. It that is the case then a relay is needed to make them work properly.

I will go look right now. When I bought them from the Jeep dealership, the book showed them as a direct replacement...

The only pn I could find was 82209880AB. I saw no wattage on the lights themselves...

Alright, so I can report success with those 55W Bosch fogs. I added a relay and they work perfectly now. I traced the original factory wiring up to a big ass plug, and both original fog wires remained seperate. This might explain why even just a single 55W light would trip the electronic 'breaker'. I guess the computer monitors each fog light indipendantly, not in combination.

I don't think it's worth doing a write-up on this, but at the same time I installed some Hella horns -- that'll be worth a write-up for sure. :-)
