sub and amp placement
So I stopped by the local shop where I've had many a custom work done in the past, and had a good discussion over what to do about the infinity system.
I wanted to toss this out there for some discussion because neither I nor the shop guy could determine how likely water could get get in to certain places. #1 being under the seat, and #2 being in the tub. The idea we settled on was to mount 8" subs under the front seats (there's a lot of clearance under there) off the ground Perhaps try to forward fire it slightly. We also agreed the best place to put the amp was in the tub, and lift it up slightly..perhaps put a drain hole. What do you guys think - good or bad idea on either of these ideas? |
Not yet sure about amp location, but 8's under each front seat is exactly what I was considering, with these - http://www.crutchfield.com/S-nH5sNHm...s48&i=575P1S48
Would love to hear others thoughts as well. |
sounds like a good plan to me... i would do something like that if i decide to get more audio. probably wont though.... i got the "kick-ass audio syndrome" in my mercedes... 2- 12" JL and JL 1500 watt amp... i will leave my jeep alone for the most part/
again, good idea... seated subs and tubbed amp |

What about a sub in the console ala TJ? I'm considering going that route - seems to be a good area that is protected from the elements (but you loose some console space).
If you can fit 8s under the seats and keep them off the floor, that would seem to be a good option - I'd be very interested in seeing the end result. Where in the tub are you considering mounting the amp? |

My only concern about such a setup is water getting in the tub or under the seats. Would drilling a drain hole in the tub and elevating the amps be enough or is that not necessary...i'm mostly looking for ideas on the feasability of these locations.. I'm also considering hollowing out the bottom of my rear seat and mounting the amps below the seat. |

Because, in my opinion, with the top off it will sound like ass being mounted in the tub. Having the sub in the back is generally fine, but with the top off the doppler effect is going to really leave all your good sound behind you to the guy driving behind you. Essentially you'll be feeling the sub more than hearing it.
As for the amp...if you didn't like my sub location then u probably won't like the amp idea either so I'll keep that to myself. Good luck with it. |

as for the amp i don't like my options. i have looked at putting it in the cargo storage place on raised mounts. and adding some weather stripping to make a dam around the ledge to create a "seal" and maybe cut some slits into that floor door for air circulation. i've looked at glove box mounts but that eliminates some storage. behind the dash is crappy cause then its pretty much inaccessible. under any seats suck cause of the moisture issue. also i thought i thought maybe throw some welds in to mount it on the wall in the rear. kinda where they mount the infinity sub. sorry for the long reply hope this helps. |

Oh. in your opinion...hmm? Well I'm glad your opinion doesn't effect me because even w/ the top down, I have to keep my sub at volume 2 (for sub setting) Anything more gets too loud...So in other words, it doesn't sound like an ass....guessing is always nice, but actually doing it would get ya a better result....and yours isn't even a 4-door....

i have a 2dr as well so here's my ideas. i was looking at putting my subs in the back seat but welding a small tab to mount them on. i know that makes no sense. think if you were sitting in the back seat on one side it would closely resemble that of an arm rest but to where there are cut outs for where the soft top "arms" would fall into place. have one mounted behind driver and one behind passenger but make them face criss-cross. i might post a chop of what i am talking about later.

Your dead on about the amps..and hence this whole thread. The big question here is what are your effective mounting options while providing both air and shielding from the elements. Obviously theres no perfect solution...because if theres air, than there is water... I'm just trying to wrap my head about the best way to get those amps and subs installed while preventing to my best ability any time of short from a water and power mix. |
just a though...if your worried about water buy marine amps...i had an old rockford and an old linear under front seat in my 85 cj and they got rain beer etc and they lasted thru it all..but get some marine amps.:D
