I have a 2012 JKU without remote start option. I am looking to get one installed. The factory one will run me $500 installed, includes 2 new key fobs. seemed high so I looked online and saw lots of options including ones that have smart phone apps to control it. So now I am thinking non factory.

anyone have suggestions or warnings when it comes to remote starter systems?

I install them for Futureshop in Edmonton and we charge about $1200 for the mobile app, starter, and bypass install. I would go with compustar.

Agreed. Compustar is what I had put in mine and I love it. Great range, dependable, plenty of options. Mine included the alarm system and installed was aprx $700. The place I had it done knew what they were doing and it works well with existing remote starter and security. (which are limited factory setups) Well worth the investment, especially when the top and doors are off in the summer.
