Climbing limits

What's a good basis for the limits of a stock jk sport? I'm not planning anything extreme, just want more info before I go offroading.

With your tires aired down your Jeep can climb up things that you could barely go up on your hands and knees.

There is one good review that comes to mind where they beat the hell out of a stock sport 2012. Make sure to check out the videos.

get a lev-o-gage .....like $15 each so you can get a feel for what it feels like. not sure exactly what the limit for pitch is but i'd imagine right around 45 degrees or so. roll, if you have an unlimited and aren't hopping i wouldn't ever worry about coming close to that

If this is your first Jeep, your puckered ass will be the limiting factor. :eek2:

Then as you get more experience, you will have a good feel for both side/front/rear angles as well as bumpers.

One of your physical limits is your tie rod height. Any obstacle taller than that you will need to get a wheel up on something to clear it. Your diffs and rear control arm mounts hang pretty low too. Doesn't matter if you are stock or not these are low points that will get hung on rocks and potentially get damaged.

After that you worry about getting high centered. Basically setting a frame rail or trans skid on something that takes weight off your tires leaving you stuck. A good rule of thumb is is it is taller than half the height of your tire you will need to be up on something to not get hung up. If it is a wide obstacle you can take it at a 30% angle leaving a tire on it through the entire time giving you better clearance but only to a point. If it is taller than your tire you will still get hung on it.

The street tires aired down will give a surprising amount of traction but the sidewalks are weak and you will rip chunks off the tread climbing rocks so don't expect them to last.

I got into some pretty hairy stuff stock. My tires and skids paid the price as did my plastic steps and once they broke free so did the back of the body under the doors. Nothing major but think rails if you want to play. Rubi rails will help a lot for a start. Plastic bumpers will get dented and scratched up quickly if you are around rocks or trees.

Really you just need to take the hard stuff slow. Heavy throttle will break stuff. Try to wheel with guys that know what they are doing and have recovery gear in your group.

Here's some stuff I did when I was still a stock Sport S.

The waterfall in the video was a little more than I could clear but a few feet on the winch and I climbed the rest on my own power. Scratched some skids but nothing some spray paint couldn't fix.
