If I'm correct and the way I understand it, the transmission recall is just turning on the stupid light, it does nothing for the actual problem, it just lets you know when the problem happens. It's bullshit.

Did you turn off ESP? The traction control will sense wheel slip and kill power to the motor.

Any ideas?
Should have been in 4lo and aired down, sand is hard on engine and tranny if you are not in 4lo

My thought exactly. Turn that stupid ESP off and you should not have any problems.

Yeah, the first time I hit the beach I had similar issues regarding falling RPMs; then I read about turning the ESP off (the 5-second press) & all good. Also with soft sand the extra rolling resistance demands a lot more power from the motor so I could see why yours didn't want to shift up. Though mines a 6-speed I often have to shift down to 2nd in the soft dry stuff & get the RPMs up high to keep going at a steady 30MPH; shift to 3rd, RPMs drop out of the V6s power band, and you lose power and forward momentum almost immediately.

Depending on how much beach driving you do it may also be worth having a look at an auxiliary cooler for your power steering fluid. There was a discussion somewhere else here on this forum about power steering pumps frequently failing after prolonged beach driving. It was suggested that the extra stress (and accompanying heat) caused by sand driving (not so much driving on the flat, hard sand by the waterline on the beach but in the rutted, soft stuff where your steering is constantly fighting the ruts and undulations) was killing the internal seals and leading to pump failure.
