Default Portable Welders

I am looking to buy a portable welder for the trail carnage.

Anyone care to post feedback on particular specs, brands, effeciency and price?

Also how are you set up? Do you use a regulator and argon?

I appreciate all feedback.

Thanks

I have seen some on ebay. But dont know much about portable welders.

I have a couple of welders at work...a lincoln mig and a miller combo mig and tig with a diesel powered generator. Portable..but for a truck.

I have seen 12v-36 volt DC powered welders.

All feedback is appreciated in making a purchase decision.

There are a number of good options. I have a wirefeed mig that I run off the dual optimas in my JK. (Shameless plug for our Benchmark Dual Battery Tray ).

The wirefeeds running off 24V work really well. Plenty of power, and long weld time. I've used mine to get out of some serious trouble on the trail before.

Default Ready Welder

It's like a mini spoolgun mig that connects to the batteries. You can get all fancy with high idles and fancy CPU integration. OR have a buddy step on the gas and giver er'.

Are you running any specials for the dual battery tray. I am thinking thats the way to go.

I see some of the portables out there, the higher the voltage, the better penetration and thicker steel it welds.

So that 24 v setup sounds like a reasonable plug..no shame in that.

Yep, the current deal is $235 shipped. That includes the tray and all mechanical parts and pieces to install the batteries. It's a 100% bolt-in installation with no cutting of metal or plastic. Typically takes 2 hours using basic hand tools. Give me a call 425.417.7372 or email john@benchmark-designs.com or send $235 via paypal to sales@benchmark-designs.com if you'd like to order. We have tons of these in stock and can ship same day.

The ready welder is SWEET. With 2 batteries in series, it has tons of power to weld anything on a JK. Plenty of run time too (hours of trigger time).

Thanks!

Yogurt,

Let me say first and foremost..great avatar!

Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you and I value what you have to say.

I have seen your welds on your custom homemade bumper and brackets...I believe you know your welding.

Between you and I, you are the expert.

Thanks,!

In my opinion the Ready Welder is the better choice for a few reasons. The MOBI and other on board welders run off the Jeeps alternator or an aux alternator. A alternator only puts out between 100 to 130 amps at best. witch is fine for most trail repairs. The ready welder will put out close to the same with one battery 220 with two and over 300 with three.
The other problem with the MOBI is that the engine has to be running to operate. I have seen Idler tension brackets break and a quick weld would fix the prob, but you cant weld without the engine running. Also if your friend breaks down and you cant get your Jeep close to his to weld it, your out of luck. One more thing with the Ready welder you can use it at home, Like me you have a 130amp 110volt mig at home, with the Ready welder you can hook up to you argon bottle and weld thicker stock than you home mig. two batteries you can weld 1/2in stock single pass three batteries 3/4in stock single pass.

One more thing The MOBI about a grand, The ready welder Just under $500 on ebay with free shipping.

Hope this helps,
