Default Rear Bumper Upgrade?

Got my first Jeep last year (2dr Wrangler Sport). Just started offroading and a guy at 4Wheel Parts told me I should upgrade my rear bumper so that I take some of the pressure off my rear tailgate. Do you guys agree and if so any suggestions on the which bumper to get? Appreciate any advice.

He means that you need a tire carrier, because a heavier tire will strain your tailgate if it's on the stock tire carrier. You don't necessarily need a bumper, but you "should" get a tire carrier. I'm going with the Genright aluminum one.

Thanks. Yes he mentioned that but also said I should upgrade the bumper as well. Sounds like that might be overkill and the stock bumper is ok, just need a new tire carrier, right?

Yes, all you really need is a tire carrier for now. Teraflex makes a good one and I got one from Draken for 1/2 the price

Thumbs up to AEV's rear bumper and carrier here. Not cheap, but they do make great stuff.

Stock bumper will be fine, it just can't take a hit. The bumper has nothing to do with your tailgate though.

On my wish lost is the smittybilt bumper. It's the only one I found that actually provides a rating for the hitch receiver capacity
