Ok-may be a dumb or embarrassing question but WTF:

What's the difference between a Hawse fairlead and the roller type? Is one better?

Roller fair leads are for metallic cables, hawse for the synthetic ropes.

This subject is new to me. When I read the original question, I did a little research, and came up with the same answer.

What I couldn't find out is why the roller if for steel and not synthetic. Any ideas out there as to why?

I grew up seeing the steel cables used with rollers and just assumed the obvious, prevent metal on metal abrasion. I talked with a guy at Warn who told me that synthetic ropes should be used with a hawse and never a roller. He didn't say why, I could only guess that the synthetic might get pinched in the corners between rollers since it is more flexible than the metal cables.

Maybe a real winch pro will chime in.

since i live in a little to no crime area, mine is just ziptied on the top two license plate holes.

When i need the winch i either cut the ties or sometimes i can get it to flip up and stay there, tricking people into thinking i meant for it to work that well

and yes that is exactly why, the corners in a roller fairlead will cause the synthetic to fray and ultimately make it useless/unsafe.

A quick Google search will give you several options if you don't want to zip-tie our plate on.
