Default Winch/synthetic line

Hey everyone,

I am about to purchase a warn 9.5 ti winch. It comes with 5/16 winch line. I want to buy Viking synthetic for it. Do I have to buy 5/16 or can I buy the stronger 3/8 synthetic line for it?

Thanks so much,

Sean

You have a 2-door so you are fine to run the smaller diameter line. I ran it for 4 years on my TJ. I did change over to the larger diameter line when I upgraded my winch on that jeep and also run it on my current JKU.

I guess what my question is...is will the larger diameter still fit the whole way on the drum? Or because it's bigger will it not all fit? It never hurts to have peace of mind with stronger rope

It'll fit, you just won't be able to spool as much line as you would with the thinner line.

Hmm...thicker line but not 125' or same thickness line but 125' it never hurts to have extra line...they guarantee their thinner line too. I guess il go thinner. And I'm a 2dr so I'm not as heavy as a 4dr

Remember that the less raps on the drum equal more pulling power. If you go with 3/8 line and 100 ft you can always get an extension if you need a longer line. That's what I did. I went from 100' of 5/16" cable to 85' of 3/8" line. Then I will just get an extension in case I need more line.

I would also do this.

This is very, very logical. I like the idea of thicker line, and longer line. It never hurts to have extra. Thanks for all the brilliant ideas

That is what I would suggest as well. Most people run 85-90 ft of 3/8's line. I do too but also carry a 50ft dual eye viking rope in my recovery bag. That gives me 140' of line if I need it (plus recovery straps and d-rings).
