I was carrying an extra 20 gallons. We figured, had everything gone as planned (it did not), approaching 300 miles of mostly 4WD driving between gas stops. At 9-10 MPG (which is realistic), I had 400 miles of range or so. The extra range could have proved necessary had a road been closed and we had to retrace some potentially long routes. Regardless, the extra gas I carried was significantly lower in price than buying it at Hite, which was our ending gas stop.

At home I'm doing well. The difference is that I normally eat a diet more filled with fiber, have the opportunity for bowel movements whenever I need (at my age, that means several times a day--please don't laugh!), and less stress. All of those contribute to what the doctor thinks was my problem--irritable bowel syndrome. He gave me some advice to help when out in remote areas--and part of that means carrying a lot more bags for my three-legged pooper. But he also had suggestions on getting more fiber when a daily salad wasn't practical. Also had a CT Scan a couple days ago. Awaiting the results of that to ensure there's not something else going on.

We should start an overlanding group for us old farts who are still doing it. That way when the call comes over the CB, "Hey, guys, gotta stop and take a dump", everyone understands that's just the way it is at our age. We can all sit around the campfire complaining about how the cold aggravates our arthritis, and everyone will understand when through the night they hear you unzip your tent door at least a half dozen times.

I have thought about that the cost is one thing then monitoring it is another but there are a lot of us out there still doing what we can. In my case the wife goes with me (I like that) and I have to set up my back country exploring based on lodging as no more tents and trees for her at our age! She asks how many miles I want to drive in a day and she is able to find lodging fairly close to that time line. Not as fun as the way you do it but we see a lot of country we would miss otherwise. I am fortunate to live in WA state as we have a lifetime of forest and gravel roads to explore.
