Default OBX fun

So, went to the outer banks this weekend, of course, it had to snow (first time in 6 years). However, mine hadn't been in the sand yet, so I figured I would take it out there.
Here we are farther offroad than most people go. Lots of people on the ferry asked questions about the Jeep.

And the sand pictures.

And here is a lighthouse picture, because it was fun.

Of course, some guy at the lighthouse has to show me up. His was one of 800 or so Series II NA models. LHD, 6cyl, awesome machine. I was tempted to trade him, but my wife wouldn't let me. It was immaculate inside.

Wherever did you get those tires? They sure leave weird tracks!

Seriously though, nice shots (love the first one) looks like fun to me. No beaches here to cruise on.

been a few years since i've been down to obx... used to head down to kill devil hills every summer (buddies would rent a house for the summer every year). don't think my fiancee's ever been down there, and what a better place to go with the new jeep.

last time i was down there was pre jeep... any suggestions on where to go to get onto driveable beach?

thanks.

go way up to Corolla, (up past duck, etc) the road ends up there and u just let some air out and get on the beach.

lots of HUGE houses up there that people drive offroad to get to :-D

I prefer to go north from Kill Devil Hills, up past the populated (built up) section of Corolla. Keep driving and it will take you to the beach access. Probably will take you 45 min to an hour from Kill Devil Hills to get there, but worth the drive. You can drive up to the Virginia line. I think to go past that you have to have a permit, but not certain.

Nice pics.

Ive got a trip planned for late May. I'll be in Avon, we'll be on the beach every day fishing at the Cape Point. One of the reasons I talked the wife into getting the new JK. Room for the kids and all you know.

The ramps are marked, but some are seasonal. Way up north and way down south are open year round, but the populated areas are off limits for the summer, as they don't want you running over tourists.

There are rumblings to limit the number of ORVs, and while I was there, there was an article in the paper about a New Jersey man trying to drive over a dune with his hummer. People stood around and jeered him when he got stuck, wouldn't help him tow out, called the cops, and ended up the guy had some pretty stiff fines, and a big tow bill.

You have to have a permit to cross the VA line, and the sand is a bit softer up north. I didn't have to air down where I was, the sand was pretty stiff.

I did see someone driving an Volvo XC down ramp 72 (best surfing) access road, but I didn't turn around and see if he actually took it out there. I remembered not wanting to go out there in my Saab.
