Solid dana 60 or solid dana 44
Need help making a decission. D60 or D44 by SOLID
Currently running Dana 44 Rear & dana 30 front both locked with ARB.. SOLID Dana 60 Bigger Ring & Pinion Unit bearing Setup 35 Spline Axle Shafts chromo Spyntec free wheeling Hub conversion 5x5.5 wheel bolt patteron SOLID Dana 44 Same Axle Tube housing as D60 Same Unit bearing setup 30 Spline (Can some one please confirm if I can have 35 spline with arb air locker) Spyntec Hub conversion 5 x5.5 wheel bolt patteron Reason for change & requirement is D30 is weak and it will break. I am running 35" Tires at the moment. SOLID dana 44 warranty upto 37" Tires very strong unbreakable etc etc If I go D60 them I have to upgrade to 37" rubber for ground clearence, change my 4" FT Ultimate lift for tire clearence and flex and ideally upgrade rear d44 to D60 where as Dana 44 will do the same job. All the Pros please help me make a decission. I want to do the things correctly. |
You should call Matt @ Solid axle and talk with him. He wont BS you about anything.
The 44's are 35 spline with ARB according to the site, Your doing both axles right? You could always do a 44/60 hybrid for the front. 44 housing with 60 outters. |
Are you sure 44 are 35 spline with arb. I know arb has Rd147 which can accomadate 35 spline axle shafts but not sure if the make for front 44
Is our JK rear d44 is high pinion bec if it is then dana 44 front is high pinion also both front and rear 44 should have the same exact size ring and pinion?

I really need some help from you guys my mind is going in circles :crazyeyes:
SOLID D44 is currently not available yet for another few months not sure exactly when. which leaves me with the only option of D60. I have seen the SOLID D60 yesterday and it looks awesome and bullet proof. The only concern i having is the clerance issue running 35" My MTZ are alomost brand new and upgrading to 37" at the moment is out of budget... Should I be fine running D60 with 35" for a while then upgrade to D60 rear and 37" tyres. We do a lot of mud trails which needs high speed and I dont want to brake my D30 bec I am trading it in to get D60. If I brake and then upgrade I will have to pay more bec then I cant trade it in any more..... Please advise |
If you plan on going up to 37s or larger definitely get the 60. If you want to stay with 35s, I would wait until the 44 is available.
A 60 will be fine with 35s until they wear out. then you get to have fun with a new lift and 37s, or even larger. |
Thats what I was thinking :thinking: go with 60 front at the moment and later upgrade the rear to 60 and run 37 tires etc
in the mean while just keep running 35 with 60 in front... the only ONE draw back i can see is the ground clearence but i can live with that.. bec i am planning to build my rig slowly and buy the parts with future view not just immediate bec going 37" tires include suspension upgrade, power steering upgrade, rear bumper with tire carrier and 37" rubber which i cant afford right now |
Go with the 60 since you're swapping it out anyway. However, a 30 can be sufficient as long as you treat it well. I knew plenty of TJ guys that had 30/35 combinations with 35's and had no problems. There were those that did, but I wouldn't have been surprised if they did with larger axles anyway.
I just read some marketing material the other day on a Dana 60 (for the JK) that was advertising better ground clearance than a Dana 44. I'll let you know if I figure out where that was. |
I would stick with the Dana 44 unless you are planning on running a 40" plus tire unless you don't mind scraping it on everything. I have not seen anyone ahve any issues with a Dana 44 on here other than the inner C bending, but I am sure that the Solid one is much stronger.

Dynatrac Pro Rock 60's
I just put a set of Pro Rock 60's on my JK. I have not measured to confirm but Dynatrac advertises increased ground clearance over the D44 with their 60's. I love 'em but they are god awful expensive.
