Default want to build my own bumpers

ok so ive been trying to find a set of bumpers that i like but im not too happy with the price the dealers charge and then they are not exactly what i want so i think im going to fab up my own but before i do i have a couple quesitons for the pros...

1.i believe im going to use 3/16" metal but what guage should it be and do i need stainless
2.what kind of welder are you using to put these pieces together ie mig tig or stick
3.i believe im only going to need a cut off wheel and chop saw to do the cutting.am i wrong about this
4.what would you have done differently if you could do it all over again.

thanks for the help and i cant wait to get started.

3/16th's on the structure, 1/4 for the winch mount if there is one, seems to be the norm. Mild steel. Stainless is not needed.
Use whatever welder you are comfortable with.
You're going to need something to cut the pieces out ie... torch or plasma torch, unless you do a very basic bumper using standard sized tube or square stock.

cool thanks for your help.i think this bumper is going to be fairly basic.not too many bends so im hoping a cut off wheel should do the trick for my cuts.i do plan to put a winch plate on the bumper but im still figuring out how i want to install it weather on top or sunk into the bumper.

Oh man you are lucky to have a shop like that for work. See I've got a good wood shop in my garage so I mocked up the main bumper yesterday out of some scrap plywood to get an idea of size and shape. If only I could make my real bumper that fast. Thanks for the help guys. Keep it coming
