X or Rubicon - Which model JK to start with for a solid build
A dealer with come further off list for an X as opposed to a Rubi. You should be able to get into an X for 24-25. That more than makes up makes up the difference in your high estimate for the D30.
Your Rubi build is missing the cost of a new front locker. So add 900 to that or subtract the 900 from the X. If he's doing ARB, get the 35 spline kit at $1400 for the X and add 500 for shafts to the Rubi.
I do not know of this "automatic throttle control at idle", but I can't see the TC having anything to do with it. And if it does, everything on my Jeep works with the atlas the same as it did before.
As to the resale value, an unmodified Rubi will get more money than an X . But at this level, it ain't going to matter.
So here's my math. I bumped it from an Atlas 2 speed to the 4
Plan A: Buy a Rubicon for $32,800 and;
- Keep the factory T-Case
- Sell the front axle $1,500
- Sell the sway bar disco $400
- Sell the wheels and tires $750
- Buy rear Shafts $500
Total cost $30,650
Plan B: Buy an X for $25,000 (Real price) and;
- Buy an Atlas $3200 (4-Speed)
- Buy Lockers $1400
- Sell axle -$500
- Sell the wheels and tires $150
Total cost $28,950

You can get an X/Sport with S package for way less than $25K ..... I got mine back in April for $19,100 ..... and same dealer has a 2010 as an internet special right now for $20K with the S-package ... assuming you want a 2-door ...

Or you could save Real big buying a used low mile X .... since after changing everything the warranty won't matter to much ....

I think the question might be more along the lines of will you really get those numbers on the sell lines. If so, then awesome. If not really so much in your area then the Sport starts to pull ahead.

The way I see it, is if I can get an Atlas and after market lockers, on a comparably equipped X, for a couple thousand dollars more than a Rubicon, the X is the way to go.
I'm not saying that an X is the way to go for everybody. 90% of the time, the better value for the average Jeeper is a Rubicon.

Yup. I think your missing the following from my first post:
"Will be a manual tranny.
If he buys a Rubi, then he'll sell the elec. swaybar disco.
The front axle will get replaced."
One of the assumptions was that the front axle will get replaced. X or Rubicon.

i bought a sahara to save initial savings, i wish i would have bought a rubicon, to mod over time. i can't go with a bigger lift before bigger tires (looks bad imo), can't go bigger the 33's before gears, and i don't want gears until i get axles. so right now i'm at a stand still until i get a ton of money to throw at my jeep, and i'm already terribly under geared with my 3.21s
