I have a friend that has been having problems when he changes his oil. He has a 2012 Sport. Every time he goes in to get his oil changed it smokes like it is burning oil. It seems to be a problem with the gasket on the oil filter breaks causing oil to splash all over the place. does anybody else have this same problem and how did you address it?

Did he change o rings with the new filter? No problems doing my own last 36K miles

Yeah make sure to change o-ring on the filter cover, and when installing make sure you put a bit of oil on it so it spins freely. O-ring also doesn't sit right at the top of threads, there is a channel where it sits in.

X2. Also, wipe the area and clean it up real good before installing the new filter, and check for any drips before driving it.

He might want to find some place different to get his oil changed. It is very easy to do yourself without making a mess.

Sounds like the grease monkey is throwing oil "poo" all over the engine compartment. The guys that change the oil don't have to go to school or take any tests like ASE certification. Your almost better off just doing it your self if you have the time... Just take the used oil to auto zone they take that stuff.

x4 on the gasket for the filter cartridge assembly. It's black just like the screw-on part and could have been left off, or maybe he accidentally put two seals on there. The filter should come with a new one in the box.

When the gasket is installed and the assembly is threading on correctly, it's a little tough to turn, but once it's all the way seated, it just "stops". There's no over-tightening. When it stops moving, that's the end.

Also check to make sure the filter is seated and installed in the right direction. It should snap into the removable portion of the cartridge with a positive "click". If it's not installed correctly, it could be preventing the cartridge assembly from seating all the way.
