I've gotten over 150k miles on my stock Rubicon KM1s.

Also, I have heard of people installing that sire tire with only minor rubbing at full flex / wheel turn. Do you have any personal experience with that size tire on a stock Rubi?

What wheel spacers would you recommend just to be safe, since it would be only a minor size difference.

Any pictures? Thinking about switching to KI2s this spring, wondering how much of a downsize it is

Maybe I'll just buy the Firestone Destination MT2's and keep the size in the stock 255/75/17. I have heard that some brands of tires are smaller in the same size as others. I wouldn't want to get what is supposed to be the same size as my stock 255/75/17 Goodrich MTs and actually get a smaller tire. Here are some pics of the Destination MT2 in the 255/75/17 size. Tell me if you think they look smaller than the stock Rubi BF Goodrich's?

Firestone Destination MT2s on the top, BF Goodrich KM2s on the bottom.

Here are some more of the Firestone Destination MT2s in the stock 255/75/17 size mounted on the Wrangler Rubicons. Do they look bigger / smaller than stock BF Goodrich's???

I had my 285/70R17 Goodyear Duratracs mounted on stock wheels a day before my wheel spacers arrived. There was obvious rubbing when turning the steering wheel completely on either side.

If you don't want to add spacers or change your wheels and but want taller tires you can go with 255/80R17 tires. They are the same width as stock but 33" tall. BF KM2's are available in that size and I think Cooper and Toyo make an A/T tire in that size.

In term of winter driving your are much better off with siped All Terrain tires, especially on packed snow and icy roads. Duratracs and BF All Terrain KO2's are Extreme Winter Rated (snowflake/mountain symbol) depending on what size you get.

Taller tires may still rub on the sway bar, and will almost definitely rub at full compression if you don't add bump stop.

Anyone have 285/70/17 tires on their jeep, and care to post comments / observations / pics?

I need new tires and am considering going with another round of stock BF Goodrich Rubi muds, or the Firestone destination MT in size 285/70/17.

Any info would be appreciated, thanks!
Most info I have read, states that you will need 1.5" wheel spacers with that size tire on a stock JK or JKU factory wheel. Check out this article:

Although they don't use spacers, I am pretty sure that you will get rubbing if you don't use spacers, especially at full articulation, or full left or full right turning.

Also, check out this tire size calculator. It give you approximate tire size spec comparison.

Here's my observations: The spacers (or wheels with similar offset) will cure 285-70/17 tires rubbing on the control arms at full turn, but now the tires will hit the fender lip at full articulation (with the swaybar disconnected off-road).

Instead of spacers, I've added a small washer to each of the steering stops, which reduces the turn radius a tiny amount and keeps the tires from rubbing on the control arms.

I'm using this size tire with a 2" lift, but the bump stops are stock and the axles still hit the stops occasionally. There isn't much clearance, but these tires haven't rubbed anything. Two caveats: I'd say this is applicable to a no-lift JK up to the point of concern over how much bump-stops compress in severe situations, and also the potential for tires of the same numerical size measuring different.
