Accidentally downshifted to 3rd instead of 5th
Hello,
New Jeep Wrangler - JK 4 door Willys Wheeler with manual transmission and at about 1650 miles.
I was driving on the freeway and I was in 6th gear. Due to a traffic situation, I had to slow down and I was somewhere between 55-60mph when I decided to downshift to the 5th gear. But like an idiot, I downshifted to 3rd instead and released the clutch.
I immediately (in about one second or so) pressed the clutch and changed it to the 5th.
It happened yesterday and so far I have not detected any problems. I did not see what my RPM may have been but 3900 - 4100 according to the chart from this site.

As long as you don't redline in the first 1,000 miles, you're ok. That sets off a chime and flashy check engine light. The motor isn't sensitive to higher RPMs.

The 3.6 is an engine that likes to rev. On my summer trips I go through the mountains and 4th gear is usually required to make it up the mountain passes without getting passed by too many tractor trailers. I have done 3rd on those 11% grades too.
Follow the break-in period advice above.
My advise to you is don't downshift to slow down, always use the brakes except if you're grade shifting, they're much cheaper than a clutch. Although at 50-60mph you should have been fine to stay in 6th. Its not like you were doing 120mph (lol) and dropped to 3rd.

I have 3.73 gearing with 32" tires, 50-60mph takes my rpm to around 1800-1900. I prefer to keep my rpm ideally between 2100-2300 which I consider to be the sweet spot, and gives me the ability to accelerate immediately if the situation requires. And eliminates the risk of engine lugging.

This thread brought back a memory from 1985. My first car was a Fiat Strada. I was on the highway going 55 and a car next to me had a pretty girl in it from my school. I went to downshift so I could accelerate rapidly past her, but accidentally dropped it into 3rd. I thought I was going to go through the windshield.

Yep. My dummy brother slapped it into 2nd instead of 4th coming up to a toll booth. The rear end hopped all over the place. No doors too which made it extra exciting.
