Don't buy Mopar

I am not sure if this is the forum to air dirty laundry but if not, I am sorry for my venting. I purchased a Mopar off-road bumper because I liked the look but it has turned out to be a poor decision. I was in a small accident and tore one of the crush can covers. Now, I am being told by Mopar that I will have to replace the entire bumper to get one of the covers. That brings the total up to $950.00 for a $745.00 bumper. I would not be as upset if this was a beater but my jeep only has 1400 miles on it.

:eek2:

glick 11-09-2007 08:26 AM

i REALLy wouldn't worry about the crush cans

Renegade 11-09-2007 09:24 AM

Does the similar Warn bumper have crush can covers? How about putting on AEV crush can covers? Call them both and see before spending that much on the Mopar bumper again. Good luck.

doojer 11-09-2007 09:28 AM

I hate to tell ya, but pretty much everything on your Jeep is made by Mopar (or at least by Chrysler, who owns Mopar).

My guess is that they would have told you the same thing had it been the factory bumper. But the previous poster is right... insurance should pay for it.

JackMac4 11-09-2007 09:45 AM

Make insurance just give you a check then go aftermarket...take a lemon and make lemonade!

Is it just me, or is your math off?

One Mopar bumper: $745 (2 much by the way, Quadratec is about $200 over dealer MSRP)
Two Mopar bumpers $950 ???? (shouldn't the total be $1490 for 2?)
Learning how to count : priceless:rotflmao2:

Ok sorry, maybe I'm missing something price wise. All joking aside, Insurance should put it back like you had it, which if that means having to buy the whole bumper, that's what they do.

drt4fun 11-09-2007 10:37 AM

Good catch! The original price was $475, not $745. Unfortunately, insurance will not cover because it was not turned in. The crush can cover was torn off by another family member so the problem just gets more complicated.

I guess next time I know not to buy Mopar accessories!:rotflmao1:

All I know about Mopar is the locking gas cap I bought is a piece of crap. I can't even get the damn thing to lock half the time.

I feel your pain, I broke the retaining clips (holding the plastic crush can) on my Mopar bumper while off roading.

It's basically just hanging on now by one screw...went to the dealer to replace the crush can cover, and was told I need to purchase a new bumper ??? WTF.

Insurance won't cover modifications unless you inform them and pay extra for the coverage. Occasionally, insurers will void coverage if they find out the vehicle was modified without their knowledge and the changes could have been a factor in the accident. This could be as simple as extra weight altering stock stopping distances

Of course check with your carrier to be sure. I know in the past that replacement parts did not need to be insured as accessories (e.g. an aftermarket bumper replaces a stock bumper).

doojer 11-09-2007 01:31 PM

My insurance agent told me that aftermarket bumpers and wheels are automatically covered up to a certain price (I forgot what that is, but I wasn't over it). So, I guess it depends on your carrier.

wow I was about to buy the MOPAR offroad bumper... this thread makes me think twice.

digitalmdj 11-10-2007 06:34 PM

Use the crush cans off the stock bumper. Cut them off and weld them on the steel bumper.

same here - seems really lame to me

HULKGREEN 11-12-2007 05:26 PM

JUST A THOUGHT!!!!

Alot of insurance deductables are anywhere from $500 to $1000 so if bumper cost is $475 ....

Doesn't that make the insurance idea a mute point....not to mention If you make a claim they usually increase your premium to recoup the money they spent!!!!!!:yup:

racer83l 11-13-2007 02:18 PM

once they have a part number for replacement cans, I'll order the Mopar bumper, til then stock I stay

What's that you say? Insurance companies have a license to print money?
Say it's not so.:naw:

Yeah, I asked my agent about this last year when my son started modifying his brand new car. The agent told me that the only issue was that if in an accident, they would calculate the replacement parts at OEM parts prices and that is what you would get.

But considering that most OEM parts cost more than the better aftermarket parts, that really isn't an issue.

That depends on your Insurance I guess. I made a list of all the mods that I had done, with prices that I had spent, and gave it to my agent. It's in my file and is covered under my policy with no added cost. I have Cotton States by the way.

I think there's a full-width bumper rule here in mass...
